Roban Earns Gold in 800 Meters at Central American and Caribbean Games

SAN SALVADOR, El SalvadorHandal Roban of Penn State track & field ran a 1:45.93 to earn gold in the 800-meter run at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games.
 
Roban continued his success from collegiate competition to international championship meets. The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines native finished in first place in San Salvador with a new personal-best 1:45.93 mark in his primary event.
 
The Nittany Lion freshman concluded his first season with Penn State with two NCAA medals. The first, a bronze medal finish in the 800 at the NCAA Indoor Championships, and the second another bronze at the outdoor NCAA Championship meet. He broke out with a 1:45.95 PR at the outdoor finals, the fourth-fastest 800 time in Penn State history.
 
Roban collected the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Mid-Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year awards after both his indoor and outdoor campaigns, completing an outstanding first year in the Blue & White with due recognition.
 
NATIONAL NITS
 
Six of Roban's teammates will compete in their own national title meet tomorrow when the USATF Championships kick off. In addition to the current Nittany Lions, several formal Penn State track & field stars will compete in Eugene, Oregon at the 2023 U.S.A. championship meet.
