Nittany Lions Shoot Stellar Final Round at Marquette Intercollegiate

Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills Results

ERIN, Wis. – The Penn State men's golf team carded the best final round amongst the tournament field Tuesday as the Nittany Lions closed the season-opening Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on a high note.

"We had a great experience competing at Erin Hills this week," said head coach Mark Leon. "We learned a number of lessons on a US Open venue that are going to help us moving forward. Obviously, the first couple days were more of a struggle then we bargained for, but I was happy to see the boys clean some things up and play the low round of the day today. We made a nice move up the leaderboard. I was also pumped to see Patrick contend for the win — He was outstanding all week. I'm excited to get back home and see who is ready to step up in qualifying to earn a spot for Wake Forest!"

The Nittany Lions carded a 4-under, 284, in Tuesday's third and final round, the lowest third-round score amongst the tournament field. Penn State moved up to eighth place with the strong final round, finishing the 54-hole event at 28-over, 892.

Graduate student Patrick Sheehan finished tied for sixth to lead the Nittany Lions. The Doylestown, Pa. native shot a 3-under, 69, Tuesday and finished the season-opening event at an even 216. The sixth-place finish marks the 11th top-10 finish of Sheehan's collegiate career.

Graduate student Jimmy Meyers placed tied for 50th after shooting a 3-over, 75, Sunday and finishing at 13-over, 229. Junior Jake Griffin carded his best round of the tournament Tuesday, shooting a 3-under, 69, to place tied for 55th at 14-over, 230.

Freshman Robby O'Regan was the third Nittany Lion to save his best for last, carding a 1-under, 71, in the final round and finishing tied for 64th at 18-over, 234. Senior James Allen placed tied for 69th at 20-over, 236, after shooting a 9-over, 81, Tuesday.

The Nittany Lions return to action Sept. 18-19 when Penn State travels to Westchester, Ill. for the Chicago Highlands Invitational hosted by Wake Forest.
