DOWN GOES NO. 5!
- The Nittany Lions defeated No. 5 Northeastern 2-1 on Sept. 24, splitting the series with the Huskies.
- Penn State struck in the third period with the game-tying goal from Leah Stecker with help from Julie Gough and Tessa Janecke.
- Alyssa Machado scored the game-winning goal off feeds by Mya Vaslet and Maggie MacEachern.
- Prior to the series, Penn State was 9-44-6 against ranked opponents.
- The win marked just the second time in program history when Penn State defeated a top-five opponent on the road.
- The last time came at No. 5 Colgate on Sept. 28, 2018, when Penn State defeated the Raiders 4-2 in Hamilton, N.Y.
SERIES HISTORY
- Penn State is facing UConn for the sixth time in program history.
- The Huskies currently lead the series 3-0-2 with the last meeting occurring on Nov. 24, 2017, when the two tied 1-1.
- The Nittany Lions have faced Hockey East teams 51 times in the programs history and tally a record of 16-23-12.
MACEACHERN NAMED CHA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Graduate defenseman Maggie MacEachern was named the College Hockey America (CHA) Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. This is her first weekly award honor as a Nittany Lion.
- MacEachern tallied five blocked shots in the series against No. 5/5 Northeastern.
- The Brooklin, Ontario native also added one assist on the game-winning goal that came in game two in the series aiding in the Nittany Lions 2-1 victory.
A BUMP IN THE RANKINGS
- Penn State was ranked 10th in the most recent USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll on Tuesday afternoon.
- The bump comes following the Nittany Lions split series against fifth-ranked Northeastern in which Penn State took game two by a score of 2-1 off a pair of goals by Leah Stecker and Alyssa Machado in the third period to secure the victory.
JANECKE ON THE FACEOFF
- In her first series of the 2023-24 season, sophomore Tessa Janecke was a strong force in the faceoff circle against No. 5/5 Northeastern.
- The Orangeville, Ill. native went 32-49 in the circle tallying a faceoff winning percentage of .653.
- In the series against the Huskies, she also tallied an assist aiding in the Nittany Lions 2-1 victory on Saturday.
- She currently sits second in the nation in faceoff wins.
