No. 14 Men's Soccer Falls to Penn in In-State Battle

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- No. 14 Penn State men's soccer falls to Penn 3-0 at Jeffrey Field. Despite their largest shot total of the season, outshooting the Quakers 17-9, the Nittany Lions couldn't find the back of the net this evening.
 
Penn State moves to 2-1-2 on the season heading into conference play. 
 
"Credit to a great Penn team on their performance tonight," said head coach Jeff Cook. "I think we are a great team and we have to keep that belief in ourselves moving forward into our first Big Ten match next Friday."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
A scoreless first half resulted in impressive defense from both squads. The Nittany Lions attack was stopped by the Quakers defense on multiple accounts. Penn State managed five shots to Penn's three throughout the first period of play. 
 
Kris Shakes was tested in goal with two saves in the first half. The second moved the keeper into the third spot all-time in career saves at Penn State.
 
Second Half
After 64 minutes with no goals scored, Penn struck with their first goal in the 65th minute. The Quakers would turn around to find another one in the 71st minute, both by Michael Hewes. 
 
Hewes earned a hat trick, scoring off a penalty kick in the 88th minute to make the final score 3-0 in favor of Penn.
 
OF NOTE

  • Shakes now ranks third all-time in Penn State history in career saves, moving his total to 230 tonight.
  • The Nittany Lions outshout the Quakers 17-9.
