WEST POINT, N.Y.- Penn State men's gymnastics earns their ninth straight West Point Open win with its team score of 407.600. This is the team's highest score since 2019 in a tri-meet again Illinois and Michigan.
Both all-around athletes for the Nittany Lions earn career bests. Matt Cormier is the all-around champion with his score of 81.950. Michael Artlip placed second in the all-around with a score of 78.900.
"It was a really solid effort tonight," said head coach Randy Jepson. "We got off to a little bit of a rocky start but what was great about tonight was we were able to see the guys rebound and finish strong. That's the mark of a solid team," he said.
Cormier's score of 14.650 on floor earned him the highest score of the night on the apparatus. Joining him in first place finishes on the night is Ian Raubal with a 14.500 score on still rings and Michael Jaroh with another first-place finish on parallel bars with a score of 14.200.
Coach Jepson says "Great job tonight by Matt Cormier and Micahel Artlip in the all-around with the top two finishes. Ian Raubal had a solid performance as well. I am really happy for those guys."
Artlip earns a career high on two of the events tonight including floor (14.050) and vault (14.450).
Freshman Raubal had a top performance on rings as well as improving his first scores last weekend on all events including: floor (12.750), vault (13.900), parallel bars (13.650) and high bar (13.400).
Matt Underhill topped his first collegiate rings score last week with a 14.050 this weekend and tied his vault score from last weekend at 14.350.
Making their first appearances as Nittany Lions are Brandon Campbell on pommel horse (12.100) and Matt Sulham on floor (13.800).
"It's nice to have a lot of guys in the finals on the second day and replicate what we did at NCAA Championships. Overall, we are very happy with the performance tonight," said Jepson.
