Men's Gymnastics Hosts Army in Season Opener on Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- Penn State men's gymnastics open its 2023 campaign on Saturday, Jan. at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall when they host Army. 
 
The Nittany Lions are ranked fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll and fifth in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Preseason Coaches Poll.

FOOD DRIVE PROMO
Fans who bring a food item to the meet on Saturday can get a ticket for $4 for the meet. This offer is only redeemable at the gate. In addition, kids 12 and under are free.
 
PARKING
• Parking for all Penn State Athletics' non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
• Parking For men's gymnastics matches, fans are asked to park in the Nittany Deck or West Deck. Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate of $6.00 through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Event day parking will be $10 per vehicle and is cash only/can be purchased on the ParkMobile app.

2022 SEASON REVIEW 
The Penn State Nittany Lion's ended the regular season with a record of 2-4 and a 0-4 record in the BIG Ten. Their highest team score of the season was at Michigan (3/19) with 401.800 points. 
 
Nine of the team's athletes competed in the National Championships final. Chase Clingman won the pommel horse title with a personal-best score of 14.425 at the National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships. 
 
The team placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships held in Rec Hall at Penn State. Clingman claimed first on pommel horse with a score of 14.425. Michael Jaroh finished third on vault (14.500) and fifth on rings (13.800). Josh Karnes took second on parallel bars with 14.300. 
 
Clingman and Michael Jaroh earned All-Big first team awards and Josh Karnes and Nick Mock earned All-Big second team awards.
 
The Lion's had five CGA First Team All-America Scholar Athletes including Michael Artlip, Derek Schlagenhauf, Nate Warren, Eric Lung and Nick Mock.
 
2023 SEASON PREVIEW

  • Penn State is ranked fourth in the Big Ten going in the preseason poll and fifth in the CGA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Michael Artlip and Matt Cormier were selected as Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch.
  • Cormier was named the 2023 Team Captain. 
  • Josh Karnes and Cormier are members of the U.S. Senior National Development Team and have been competing internationally during the off season.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series 34-17-1. 
  • Penn State has won the last 16 consecutive meets including 15 at home.

 
SCOUTING ARMY

  • Army finished the 2022 season 3-7 overall.
  • Matthew Davis finished 12th in the all-around at the NCAA Championship in 2022 and Jacob Nauman finidhed tied for 28th in the finals on vault. Nauman returns this season as a senior.

UP NEXT
The Nittany Lions travel to Army West Point next weekend for the West Point Open on Jan. 13-14. The meet will consist of Penn State, Army, Navy, William & Mary and Nebraska.
