Four Unanswered Goals Lead No. 18 Men's Hockey Past St. Lawrence, 4-1

CANTON, N.Y. – Graduate transfer Jacques Bouquot (South Windsor, Conn.) started the comeback as No. 18 Penn State used four unanswered goals to complete its North Country weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory over St. Lawrence in non-conference action at Appleton Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Lawrence (1-2-0) opened the scoring as Felikss Gavars skating into the slot and while losing his stick as his shot was deflected it snuck through some bodies, stayed on the ice and Nittany Lion senior goaltender Liam Souliere (Brampton, Ontario) never saw it at 11:11 of the first period for the 1-0 Saints lead.
  • Penn State (3-0-0) secured the equalizer early in the second on an odd-man rush as junior Carson Dyck (Lethbridge, Alberta) waited patiently before feathering a pass to Bouquot and he didn't miss securing his first Nittany Lion goal and the 1-1 score at 4:41 of the middle frame.
  • Midway through the second period, Penn State took the lead with a powerplay tally as senior Xander Lamppa (Rochester, Minn.) found sophomore Jarod Crespo (Seven Lakes, N.C.) above the left dot for a one-timer and the 2-1 advantage at the 10:10 mark.
  • The Nittany Lions extended the lead late in the third period as an odd-man rush developed and junior Danny Dzhaniyev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found classmate Ryan Kirwan (DeWitt, N.Y.) with a yawning net and he didn't miss for the 3-1 edge at the 15:06 mark.
  • Sophomore Alex Servagno (Gibsonia, Pa.) then hit the empty net at 17:40 of the third period to account for the final score.

GOALTENDING
Souliere improves to 3-0-0 on the year after stopping 24-of-25 shots while his counterpart, Ben Kraws, falls to 1-2-0 after making 35 saves in the defeat.

NOTES

  • The Saints opening goal marked the first time in three games this season that Penn State has failed to get on the board first.
  • The Nittany Lions held the commanding 39-25 advantage in shots on goal while going 1-for-5 with the man-advantage and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
  • Penn State moves to 3-2-1 all-time against St. Lawrence and a perfect 2-0-0 at Appleton Arena
  • Penn State is 3-0-0 to begin the season for the second-straight season and the fourth time in the first 12 years of the program.
  • Senior alternate captain Christian Sarlo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) skated in his 100th career game on Saturday evening.
  • Bouquot and freshman Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) each collected their first multi-point efforts at Penn State. For Bouquot his one goal and one assist performance marks the ninth multi-point game of his collegiate career. Fink's two assists are a career-best.
  • Kirwan's three-game goal streak to start the season is a new career-long while Dzhaniyev's three-game assist streak is also a career-best and just one game shy of his career-long point-streak of four games achieved last season.
