Asman, Borgen Garner Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Graduate goalkeeper Katherine Asman earned her second consecutive Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week recognition and sophomore midfielder Olivia Borgen hauled in TopDrawerSoccer Honorable Mention National Team of the Week accolades, both organizations announced Tuesday.

Behind Asman and Borgen's leadership, the Nittany Lions registered a pair of draws and picked up a crucial two points in the Big Ten Conference regular season standings last week. The Nittany Lions recorded their eighth shutout of the 2023 campaign and battled to a scoreless draw on the road against Purdue last Thursday in West Lafayette. On Sunday, the Blue & White overcame a one-goal deficit and red card to battle for a shorthanded 2-2 draw against the Northwestern Wildcats to conclude PSU's road schedule.

Last week, Penn State goalkeeper Katherine Asman was instrumental in guiding the Nittany Lions to a pair of league draws at Purdue and Northwestern. Against the Boilermakers, Asman registered a four-save shutout, recording the 24th clean sheet of her career while moving into a tie for fourth at PSU all-time in shutouts with former teammate Amanda Dennis. Against Northwestern, Asman recorded 11 saves in the match, tying her career high in the category. Her performance against Northwestern saw her tie for eighth in the Penn State record book for the most saves in a single match in program history.

Asman also managed to set a conference season high in saves, outperforming the league's previous season-best mark of nine set by six different keepers. The graduate team captain became the first Big Ten shot-stopper to reach the 10-save threshold since Nebraska keeper Samantha Hauk logged 13 saves on Oct. 20 of last season, while simultaneously becoming the first Big Ten goalkeeper to record two career performances with 11-or-more saves since at least 2020. The Roswell, Georgia, native brought home her seventh weekly honor from the league office and secured a conference-best third B1G Goalkeeper of the Week accolade this season.

Borgen led the way offensively for the Nittany Lions in their crucial 2-2 draw against Northwestern on Sunday. In a shorthanded situation, Borgen recorded the first multi-goal outing of her collegiate career while moving into the top spot on the team's roster in total goals scored this season with six. The sophomore from Hanson, Massachusetts, also managed to match her career high in shots on goal with two, tying her performance against West Chester on Aug. 20 of this season. TopDrawerSoccer's announcement made Borgen the sixth Nittany Lion to earn a weekly honor from the organization this season, landing her first in the process.

No. 4 Penn State women's soccer prepares for the final two regular season matches in its 30th varsity season, as the Nittany Lions play host to a pair of nationally-ranked foes this week on Jeffrey Field. PSU begins decision week with a 7 p.m. (ET) contest against the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday, Oct. 19. Penn State will conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. fixture against the Wisconsin Badgers on decision Sunday, Oct. 22.
