Women’s Ice Hockey Set for Series with In-State Rival Mercyhurst

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's ice hockey team is traveling to northwest Pennsylvania to face CHA rival Mercyhurst with a two-game series starting on Friday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

HISTORY

  • Penn State is facing Mercyhurst for the 48th time in program history. Mercyhurst leads the series 24-14-9.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS

  • Mercyhurst is returning 17 out of 26 players on their roster.
  • Amongst the returning players is senior forward Sara Boucher who recorded a team-high 21 goals and 17 assists, tallying 38 points last season.
  • Also returning is graduate goaltender Ena Nystrøm who maintained a .924 save percentage last season.

THE RED, WHITE, AND JANECKE

  • Forward Tessa Janecke and team USA dominated the November Rivalry Series games with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday winning by scores of 3-1 and 5-2.
  • Janecke scored one point in Saturday's game following an assist she delivered on the teams third goal of the game coming off the stick of Hannah Bilka.
  • The assist was her first in a Rivalry Series game in her career.

HOLY HAT-TRICK!

  • Junior forward Mya Vaslet tallied her first career hat-trick in Penn State's 8-2 victory over Lindenwood on Nov. 4.
  • The last time a Nittany Lion recorded a hat-trick came a season ago as Tessa Janecke scored her first career hat-trick against the Lions in the CHA semifinal game on February 25, 2023.
  • With Vaslet's impressive play, she captured her first CHA Forward of the Week honor in her career on Nov. 6.
  • Vaslet currently leads the team in goals this season with four and has a total of six points.

STARTING STRONG IN CHA PLAY

  • Penn State enters this week's series on a four-game win streak after sweeps over Syracuse and Lindenwood to begin CHA play.
  • In the month of November, Penn State has started 2-0 and currently leads the CHA in points with eight after four games played.
  • Last season, the Nittany Lions lost just one CHA game and finished with an impressive 14-1-1 CHA record.
