UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 17 Penn State erased a two-goal third period deficit to force overtime and secure a 2-2 tie against Notre Dame in Big Ten Conference action at Pegula Ice Arena on Sunday night.
After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period, senior Xander Lamppa (Rochester, Minn.) scored the lone goal in a three-round shootout to secure the extra point in the Big Ten standings for the Nittany Lions as both teams split the weekend series collecting three points apiece.
Penn State moves to 5-2-2 overall and 0-0-2-0-0-1 in conference action while the Irish now stand at 4-3-2 on the year and 0-0-2-0-0-1 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period and strong start to the second period by Penn State it was Notre Dame finding a goal against the pace of play as Drew Bavaro picked a corner from the high slot for the 1-0 lead at the 4:52 mark of the middle frame.
- Penn State would then get what looked like the tying goal from Xander Lamppa, but it was waved off as Notre Dame goaltender Ryan Bischel's mask came loose, shortly after the Irish would push the lead to 2-0 as Trevor Janicke found the back of the net from distance at 9:54 of the second stanza.
- The Nittany Lions cut the deficit in half early in the third period as freshman Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) sniped one over the blocker of Bischel for the 2-1 at the 1:42 mark.
- With less than a minute remaining in regulation and the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker it was junior Dylan Lugris (Buffalo, N.Y.) who tapped home a rebound at the near post after classmate Ryan Kirwan's (DeWitt, N.Y.) bid clanked the far post and trickled across the goal line right on Lugris' tape for the 2-2 score with just 35.7 ticks left on the clock.
- After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period, it was Lamppa getting Bischel down and out in the third round of the shootout before roofing the puck for the lone goal securing the extra point in the Big Ten standings.
GOALTENDING
Senior Liam Souliere (Brampton, Ontario) made 29 saves and sees his record move to 4-1-1 on the year while Bischel sits at 4-3-2 after stopping 48-of-50 shots on the night.
NOTES
- Penn State held the commanding 50-31 edge in shots on goal while going 0-for-4 with the man-advantage but killing off the lone powerplay chance for the Irish.
- The scoreless first period by both teams marks just the second time in nine games this season where both teams failed to light the lamp and is just the third time in nine games Penn State hasn't scored over the opening 20 minutes of play.
- Lugris has now scored in three-straight games to tie his career-best goal and point streak and it marks his second extra attacker goal of the season as he also found the back of the net with the goaltender pulled last Friday against Alaska-Anchorage.
- The Irish scored the opening goal for the second-straight night as the Nittany Lions are now 1-1-2 when not scoring first this season.
- Junior Danny Dzhaniyev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was kept without a goal for the first time in the last five games, but with his secondary assist on Lugris' goal he is now riding a career-long point streak of five games.
