Lady Lions Welcome Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball continues its four-game home stand with a non-conference morning match up against Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Tip off in the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 11:30 a.m. as the Lady Lions welcome schools from the area for education day with over 1,200 kids in attendance.
 
The Lady Lions look to build on a massive win over Saint Francis on Sunday, Dec. 17. Penn State downed the Red Flash 119-43 with its second largest point total in program history.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned its highest point total of the season and second highest in program history with a 119-43 win over Saint Francis on Sunday, Dec. 17. The team was just one point shy of meeting their all-time biggest point total of 120 which they achieved against Delaware State in 2021.
  • The Lady Lions roared to their largest margin of victory this season at 76 points. 
  • Six players scored in double figures and three Lady Lions posted career high performances.
  • Leilani Kapinus led the team in scoring with a personal best 25 points. She also contributed six rebounds, five steals and four assists. 
  • Moriah Murray scored 18 points, the most of her career, while adding five assists.
  • Jayla Oden also earned a personal best mark of 18 points. 
  • Shay Ciezki added her ninth double digit scoring performance during her freshman campaign with 15 points and Ali Brigham put up 16 points, her most of the season and sixth double figure scoring performance this season. 
  • Penn State produced its most bench points of the season at 46 points from subs. 
  • The Lady Lions posted their lowest turnover number of the season with only eight. 
  • Penn State earned the most first half points with 67 points in 20 minutes in the program's history.
  • The Lady Lions shot 55.8% from the field, attempting 77 field goals throughout the game.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa sits fifth in the conference in scoring average (17.2) and eighth in total points scored (172). 
  • Shay Ciezki ranks 15th in the Big Ten, averaging 14.3 points per game. Her total of 158 points through 10 games sits at a rank of 14. Ciezki is fourth in the Big Ten and 33rd nationally in made three-pointers with 29.
  • Leilani Kapinus is sixth in the conference in blocks with 14.
  • The Lady Lions rank second in scoring average, scoring at a 87.1 clip per game. This percentage ties them for 12th nationally. Their 50.4 field goal percentage is good for 11th in the country and fourth in the Big Ten.
  • Penn State's three-point percentage of 41.2% ranks it first in the Big Ten and third in the nation. The team's 101 three pointers made is third in the league.
  • The Lady Lions also rank third in the league in steals per game (10.73), second in total blocks (55) and blocked shots per game (5.0) and second in bench points per game (29.3).

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points).
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List. 

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS

  • The Blue Devils are 2-9 this season so far. 
  • After losing five straight games, Central Connecticut managed to pick up a win against Colgate at home on Monday, Dec. 18. 
  • The Blue Devils' only other win this season came against UMass Lowell on Nov. 21.
  • Two Blue Devils are averaging double figures: Samora Watson leads the offense, averaging 16.7 points per game and Belle Lanpher averages 14.7. 
  • Central Connecticut holds opponents to a 29.5% mark beyond the arc. 
  • Lanpher was named to the Preseason All-NEC team and CCSU was picked to finish ninth in the league ahead of the 2023-24 season.


PENN STATE –CENTRAL CONNECTICUT SERIES

  • The Lady Lions and the Blue Devils have only met twice before in both programs' histories. Penn State have won both games.
  • The most recent match up occurred on November 20, 2017, the Lady Lions winning 83-66.
  • Both games were played in the Bryce Jordan Center.
