UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women's soccer saw a trio of student-athletes earn distinction as College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans Wednesday afternoon, as senior+ midfielder Cori Dyke and senior+ defender Kate Wiesner both secured Second Team distinction while graduate goalkeeper Katherine Asman landed Third Team honors.
CSC seeks to honor and celebrate student-athletes who represent the highest caliber of academic and athletic achievement through the annual Academic All-District and Academic All-America programs. The Nittany Lions placed five student-athletes on the Academic All-District Team earlier this year and booked the most Academic All-Americans in a single season in program history at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign. The previous program record of two was set on five prior occasions, most recently in 2021 with the selections of program legends Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey.
Penn State was one of 25 institutions to have a student-athlete selected as an Academic All-American and was one of just five schools in Division I to book multiple honors. PSU finished with the second-most selections in the 2023 season, trailing Stanford's four honorees. The Blue & White led the Big Ten Conference with their trio of honors, with Nebraska landing a pair of choices in Eleanor Dale and Sarah Weber, while Michigan State's Justina Gaynor rounded out the six B1G performers earning accolades this season.
One of the most decorated student-athletes in the nation this season, Dyke was instrumental in Penn State's climb through the national rankings while leading the program's first run to the national quarterfinals in five years. Recognized as the 2023 B1G Defender of the Year, Dyke's defensive acumen saw the Nittany Lions lead the Big Ten in goals-against average with a 0.640 mark. On the offensive end, she booked single-season career bests in goals scored with five, assists with six and total points with 16. The Littleton, Colorado, native set multiple program career records this year, moving into first place at PSU all-time in matches played and matches started with 108 in both categories while finishing first all-time at PSU in fielder minutes played with 9,054. She earns her first career selection to the CSC Academic All-America team and secured Penn State's 22nd recognition all-time in addition to the program's seventh Second Team honor.
Wiesner, a native of Monrovia, California, saw continued success on the pitch and in the classroom over the course of the 2023 campaign. The veteran outside back played in 21 of PSU's 23 matches, making 20 starts while ranking tied for seventh on the squad in total scoring with nine points. Wiesner scored a pair of goals on the season and added five assists overall this year. A powerful presence in the classroom and in the community, Wiesner finished her collegiate career with a spectacular 3.91 cumulative grade point average in her Human Development and Family Studies postgraduate program, coupled with an identical 3.91 mark in her undergraduate journalism program. Wiesner becomes the 23rd selection to the CSC Academic All-America teams in Penn State women's soccer history and became the eighth honoree to book Second Team recognition.
A native of Roswell, Georgia, Asman carved out a reputation for herself as one of the most dominant shot-stoppers in women's college soccer over the past six years. She led the Big Ten Conference in goals-against average with a 0.642 mark while simultaneously leading the league in save percentage with a 0.856 tally. Asman moved into the top three at Penn State in multiple statistical categories this season, including career saves, shutouts and goalkeeper minutes played while ranking fourth in school history in career victories. In the classroom, she compiled a 3.96 cumulative GPA while pursuing her master's in business administration in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. She secures the first CSC Academic All-America distinction in her collegiate career and becomes the 24th Academic All-American in PSU history while booking the program's eighth selection to the Third Team.
Established in 1952 and selected by College Sports Communicators, Academic All-America is the longest-running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports at all NCAA levels, the NAIA, two-year colleges and Canadian institutions. Teams are announced year-round and amplified by CSC member colleges, universities, and conferences on a wide local, regional, national, and even international scope.
