Penn State Finishes 15th In LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics finished 15th, with 986 points, in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Division I standings after the final standings update of the 2022-23 year.
 
Penn State posted 209 points in the Spring championship season, led by Men's Lacrosse's 83 points following its NCAA Semifinals appearance. Men's Volleyball contributed 55 points after reaching its NCAA Semifinals. Men's Track & Field (46) and women's lacrosse (25) added points after successful Spring seasons.
 
Penn State tallied 493 points during the Winter championship season, led by wrestling's 100 points after claiming its 10th national title in the last 12 years. The points include 66 by fencing, 64 by men's gymnastics, 60 by men's hockey, 53.5 by women's gymnastics, 50 by men's basketball, 39 by men's swimming & diving, 35.5 by men's indoor track & field and 25 by women's hockey.
 
In the Fall, Penn State secured 309 points and held sixth in the standings after the Fall championship season, led by field hockey's 83 points after reaching the NCAA Semifinals. The Fall points include football (72), after its Rose Bowl victory, women's soccer (64), women's volleyball (64) and women's cross country (26).
 
Penn State's 493 points are its most in a Winter season since 2019 (493.5). Penn State has ranked among the Top 10 following the Winter championship season in 16 of the last 18 years the standings have been published (not published in Winter 2020 due to COVID-19). The Nittany Lions' 493 points in the Winter championship season rank third in the country.
 
Men's Lacrosse, led by head coach Jeff Tambroni, reached the NCAA Semifinals in Philadelphia with wins over Princeton (13-12) and Army (10-9), before falling in overtime against No. 1 Duke (16-15). Jack Fracyon, TJ Malone and Matt Traynor captured USILA All-America honors.
 
Led by head coach Mark Pavlik, men's volleyball finished the 2023 campaign with a 27-4 record, including 10-0 in the EIVA. Penn State won the EIVA regular season and tournament titles, sweeping Princeton (3-0) in the EIVA Championship. In the NCAA Tournament, The Nittany Lions knocked off Ohio State (3-1) to advance to the NCAA Semifinals, falling in five sets against second-seeded Hawaii. Cole Bogner and Toby Ezeonu were named first-team All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
 
Handal Roban, Tyler Merkley, and Evan Dorenkamp each earned first-team All-America accolades at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Roban finished with a bronze medal in the 800 meters, Merkley posted a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw, and Dorenkamp placed eighth in the 1500 meters for head coach John Gondak's squad.
 
Women's lacrosse, led by head coach Missy Doherty, went 11-7 overall and earned three wins in Big Ten action. The Nittany Lions were selected for the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 10 Stony Brook in the first round. Ellie Hollin received All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), while Kristin O'Neill picked up All-America accolades from Inside Lacrosse.
 
Stanford finished first in the overall standings with 1,412 points. They were followed in the Top Five by Texas (1,370.5), Ohio State (1,170.75), Virginia (1,105.5) and Florida (1,091.5).
 
Penn State is one of three Big Ten schools among the Top 15 and one of six Big Ten schools represented in the Top 30.
 
Under the leadership of Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft, Penn State has one of the nation's most comprehensive and successful athletic programs, featuring 800 student-athletes across 31 varsity programs (16 men's, 15 women's). The Nittany Lions' 31 programs are tied for the fourth-highest number of sports sponsored by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution. 
 
Penn State student-athletes have led the athletic department to 40 Big Ten championships and 11 NCAA National Championships since 2012. The Nittany Lions have finished in the top 15 of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup 20 times in the last 29 years (the Directors' Cup was not awarded in 2019-20).
