Lady Lions Return to Bryce Jordan Center to Host Purdue in THON Game

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball is back in Happy Valley to take on the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday, Jan. 18. Tip off in the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 7 p.m. with the game being nationally televised on the Big Ten Network. 
 
Penn State looks to build off its momentous 1000th program win that came on Sunday. Jan. 14 at Rutgers. The Lady Lions will celebrate this achievement prior to the game on Thursday.

vs Purdue

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • PARKING: Parking for all athletic events requires a valid university permit or payment of an applicable parking fee. Parking can be purchased in advance by 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each game using Prepaid ParkMobile for $5.50, or can be purchased on game day for $10. Parking for men's basketball can be found at Jordan East, Stadium West, or Porter North lots.

  • CLEAR BAG POLICY: The Bryce Jordan Center has a clear bag policy. Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVB and are 12" x 6" x 12" or smaller are permitted. Small clutches or wristlets that are 4" x 6" x 1" are also permissible, as well as one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags. All clear bags and patrons are subject to metal detection and/or bag inspection upon entering the venue. Bag policy details can be found here.

GAME PROMOTIONS

  • First 100 students in attendance will get a free chicken basket and first 250 students will receive a free Dunkin Donuts gift card.
  • This will be the Lady Lion's THON game, the team will wear shirts during pregame to honor THON and there will be a foul shot contest at halftime. Women's basketball will donate money in the winner's name to THON.
  • Teammates for Life, Penn State's women's athletics initiative, will host a 'Corks on the Court' event. The first 100 students in attendance will get a free Teammates for Life shirt. The organization will also be honored at halftime with a video.
  • The Lady Lions will celebrate their 1000th program win prior to tip off with a video and ball presentation. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned its second conference victory of the season with a 94-80 result on the road at Rutgers on Sunday, Jan. 14.
  • The Lady Lions earned their 1,000th program win, becoming only the 29th team to do so in women's college basketball history. 
  • Ashley Owusu made her return to the court after 322 days, contributing 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes of work.
  • Four Lady Lions scored in double figures throughout the contest: Owusu (18), Marisa (17), Valladay (17) and Campbell (11). 
  • Valladay shot nearly perfect from the field going 6-of-7 including 3-of-3 from three-point range. 
  • Alli Campbell did not miss a shot making all four attempts including three, three point shots for her best performance of the season.
  • Penn State shot 55.6% from the field, its seventh time shooting 55% or better this season and shot 60% from the field, matching that mark for the second time of the season for its highest percentage. 
  • The Lady Lions totaled 23 assists on only 11 turnovers.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa ranks 8th in the B1G in points per game and seventh in field goal percentage (49.7).
  • Shay Ciezki ranks 12th in the Big Ten, averaging 15.3 points per game. Her total of 244 points through 16 games sits at a rank of 11. Ciezki is third in the Big Ten and 24th nationally in made three-pointers with 45. Her 40.9 clip beyond the arc sits her fourth in the conference.
  • Leilani Kapinus is sixth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.0 mark and fourth in steals (32).
  • The Lady Lions are second in the country in three-point percentage and first in the B1G, shooting 42.2%. They also rank 14th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 9.2. The team also has the sixth highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 87.6 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks sixth in the nation and second in the conference in field goal percentage (50.9).
  • The Lady Lions also rank second in the league in steals per game (10.6), second in blocked shots per game (4.6) and second in bench points per game (27.6).
  • The Lady Lions defense forces 21.13 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 24th in the nation.

2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points).
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List. 

SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS

  • The Boilermakers sit at 10th in the conference right behind the Lady Lions with the same B1G record. Their league wins came against Rutgers and Wisconsin with losses to Iowa, Maryland and Minnesota.
  • Purdue made a run to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2017, finishing the year with a 19-11 overall record. It lost to Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament and St. John's in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Three Boilermakers average double figure scoring. Abbey Ellis leads the squad averaging 14.3 points per game, Madison Layden averages 11.5 and Caitlyn Harper records 10.6 per game.
  • Madison Layden ranks first in the Big Ten in three point percentage, shooting 50% beyond the arc which sits her fourth in the nation. 
  • Jeane Terry ranks third in the B1G in assists and assists per game to sit her at a national rank of 20 and 21 respectively.
  • Purdue looks to bounce back from two consecutive losses to Iowa and Maryland.

PENN STATE –PURDUE SERIES

  • Purdue leads the all-time series between the two teams by a 23-35 margin. 
  • The series dates back to Dec. 21, 1988.
  • The Boilermakers won the most recent match up last season on Feb. 22, 2023 with a 86-62 final score but split the home-and-home series with a win in the first game on Jan. 7, 2023.
  • The Lady Lions are 13-11 in games played in the Bryce Jordan Center.
  • The most recent game in the BJC resulted in a Lady Lions win on Jan. 7, 2023 (70-60).
