UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State women's basketball is set to host the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday, Jan. 21. Tip off in the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 1 p.m. as the Lady Lions look for their second consecutive conference win and 13th win of the season.

The Lady Lions hold a 12-5, 3-3 Big Ten record so far throughout the 2023-24 campaign while the Cornhuskers sit at a record of 13-5, 5-2 Big Ten.

  • CLEAR BAG POLICY: The Bryce Jordan Center has a clear bag policy. Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVB and are 12" x 6" x 12" or smaller are permitted. Small clutches or wristlets that are 4" x 6" x 1" are also permissible, as well as one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags. LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State earned its second straight conference win to elevate its B1G record back to .500. 
  • The Lady Lions defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 80-67 on their home court. 
  • A duo of graduate guards, Tay Valladay and Ashley Owusu paced the team on offense.
  • Valladay led the Lady Lions in scoring with 22 points, her 10th time surpassing double figures and seventh in a row this season. She also notched her fourth 20-plus-point scoring outing of her career including two at Penn State.
  • Owusu was dominant once again, totaling 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. In only two games she averages 18.5 points and five rebounds.
  • The Virginia native also surpassed 1,400 career points with her 19-point outing.
  • Penn State shot a 50.8% clip from the field, its ninth time shooting 50% or above this season in a game. The Lady Lions have recorded 50% or better shooting in consecutive games for the first time since 2021 when they shot 56.2% and Rider when they shot 53.2%.The Lady Lions produced 39 points off the bench.
  • Penn State forced 21 Purdue turnovers and converted 21 points from its defense.

LADY LIONS IN THE RANKS 

  • Makenna Marisa ranks 11th in the B1G in points per game and seventh in field goal percentage (48.7).
  • Shay Ciezki ranks 13th in the Big Ten, averaging 14.6 points per game. Her total of 249 points through 17 games sits at a rank of 12. Ciezki is fifth in the Big Ten and 27th nationally in made three-pointers with 46. Her 40.4 clip beyond the arc sits her fifth in the conference.
  • Leilani Kapinus is sixth in the conference in blocks per game with a 1.0 mark and fourth in steals (35).
  • The Lady Lions are second in the country in three-point percentage and first in the B1G, shooting 41.5%. They also rank 15th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with 9.0. The team also has the sixth highest scoring offense in the country, averaging 87.2 points per game.
  • Penn State ranks fifth in the nation and second in the conference in field goal percentage (50.9).
  • The Lady Lions also rank first in the league in steals per game (10.6), second in blocked shots per game (4.5) and first in bench points per game (28.2).
  • The Lady Lions defense forces 21 turnovers per game which is second in the B1G and 26th in the nation.

 
2023-24 ACCOLADES

  • Shay Ciezki collected her first conference accolade of the season after totaling 62 points through three games including a personal best 27-point performance against Oklahoma State in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship. The Buffalo native made the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 27.
  • Marisa earned a spot on the three-person Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (11/20) after her to double digit scoring outings against Kansas (34 points) and St. John's (15 points).
  • Marisa was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the second consecutive season. She also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten preseason team.
  • Owusu repeats on the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award Watch List.

SCOUTING THE CORNHUSKERS

  • Nebraska has had an impressive start to the season with an overall record of 13-5 and a Big Ten record of 5-2.
  • The Cornhuskers have conference wins against Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan State, Illinois and Michigan.
  • Three players are averaging double digit scoring.
  • Alexis Markowski leads the team on offense, averaging 16.8 ppg. She leads the conference in double doubles and ranks seventh nationally in that category with 11. She also ranks first in rebounds per game in the B1G and 25th in the nation (10.1)
  • Jaz Shelley is the second Cornhusker consistently scoring in double figures at a 12.1  clip per game.
  • Freshman Natalie Potts has had an impressive start to her rookie campaign as a four-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week as she averages 11.3 ppg.
  • Nebraska outrebounds its opponents at an impressive rate, 10.7, good for a first-place ranking in the conference and 14th in the country.
  • The Cornhuskers are holding opponents to a 27.8 three-point percentage which is the best mark in the B1G.

PENN STATE –NEBRASKA SERIES

  • Nebraska leads the all-time series 8-11 with the teams only meeting 19 times in both programs' history. The first meeting occurred in 1993.
  • The Cornhuskers won the most recent match up in 2023 by a 80-51 clip on Jan. 11, 2023 in Lincoln. 
  • The Lady Lions are 5-3 in games played in Happy Valley against Nebraska.
