DMR School Record Highlights Final Day of National Open Competition for Track & Field

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Nittany Lions concluded the second and final day of competition at the Penn State National Open with yet another school record, this time in the women's distance medley relay.

The women's DMR team of Hayley Kitching, Victoria Vanriele, Maddie Ullom and Kileigh Kane set the school record in the event, beating the previous top time by almost five seconds, going 10:56.26. With the mark, the group became Penn State's first women's team to clock a sub-11:00 time in the event.

Olivier Desmueles and Handal Roban also entered the Penn State record books once again as they set the third and fourth-fastest 600m times in school history, with 1:16.23 and 1:16.42 marks, respectively.

TRACK EVENT SUMMARY 

In Penn State's first track event of the day, the unseeded 400m races, Ryleigh Hearn and Austin Gallant took the track for the women's and men's squads. Gallant took home first place with a 47.06, just 0.03 away from his all-time PR in the event. Gallant's time was the fastest 400 of the day, besting every runner in the seeded 400m section as well. Hearn finished sixth with a 56.55 PR for the women's team.

In the unseeded women's 600m, Kylie Jacoutot set her personal best time of 1:35.45.  

Charlotte Costich came in third for the unseeded women's 3000m with a time of 9:44.71. Katie Dallas finished sixth with a time of 9:47.20. Both set personal records.

The team of Kitching, Vanriele, Ullom, and Kane began the seeded track events with their school record-setting DMR run, finishing second overall with a 10:56.26. On the men's side, Yukichi Ishii, Matt DeMatteo, Evan Dorenkamp and Kevin Haas took home fourth place with their time of 9:43.46.

In the seeded women's 400m, Zoey Goldstein clocked a time of 53.78, the first sub-54 mark of her career, to win the event. Jermecia Brown took fifth with a time of 55.17. For the men, James Onwuka finished first with a season-best time of 47.46. Korbin Martino came in fourth with a 47.96.

In the men's 600m invite, the Nittany Lions swept the event,  taking first, second, and third. Desmeules ran a 1:16.23 earning him first, Roban clocked a 1:16.42 for second, and Carter Fitzgerald came in third with a time of 1:16.53. Each of them set a personal-best marks. Desmeules and Roban's marks set the third and fifth-fastest times for the event in school history, respectively.

Luke Seymour came in second and set a personal best in the men's seeded 1000m with a time of 2:23.48.

In Penn State's final event of the day, Faith DeMars came in third with a time of 9:16.68 in the women's 3K invite. Sophia Toti followed close behind, earning fourth with her PR time of 9:16.77. Makenna Krebs ran a 9:21.78, earning her sixth, while Lea Hatcher came in seventh with a personal-best 9:24.69.

FIELD EVENT SUMMARY 

In the men's high jump, Isaac Osifo took home third with a 6-8 (2.03m) clearance while Timothy Watson tied for fourth clearing the same height.

Tesia Thomas took home first in the women's triple jump, recording a 40-9.75 (12.44m) leap. The win was Thomas' second in two days, following her long jump victory yesterday. Emi Erekosima placed fourth for the men recording 48-2 (14.68m) jump.

In the women's pole vault, Zurich cleared 13-8.5 (4.18m) which earned her a tie for first. Teammate Victoria Atkinson earned fifth place in the event with a clearance of 13-4.5 (4.08m). Zachary Salas placed fourth in the men's pole vault, clearing 15-1 (4.60m)

Duane Knisely finished fourth (second collegian) in the men's shot put, throwing 59-9 (18.21m) while Dylan Lambrecht took home sixth with a 56-8.75 (17.29m) toss.

MULTI-EVENTS

Camden Kirker wrapped up the heptathlon by earning third place in the 1000m with a time of 2:49.71 and sixth place in pole vault recording a 12-5.5 (3.8m). Kirker completed the first heptathlon of his collegiate career, finishing seventh overall with 4,594 points.

UP NEXT 

The Nittany Lions will host the Sykes & Sabock Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 3. The meet will serve as Penn State's Senior Day meet, presented by the Penn State Alumni Association.
