UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 17 Penn State women's lacrosse lost 10-9 in a back-and-forth game against Colorado in their second all-time meeting Friday evening at Panzer.
Penn State moves to 1-1 (0-0 Big Ten) while Colorado earns their second consecutive win to improve to 2-0 (0-0 PAC 12).
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – PSU 2, Colorado 1
Gretchen Gilmore opened up scoring for the Nittany Lions with her second of the season, assisted by Kelly MacKinney, her first of her career, with 7:56 left.
After Colorado tied the game, Jess Peluso had a yellow card, which resulted in a Kristin O'Neill free position goal, her seventh of the season with 1:29 to go.
Second Quarter – PSU 5, Colorado 3
Colorado scored two consecutive goals, before Gretchen Gilmore scored her second of the game with a free position goal to tie it up. Brooke Hoss followed up with a Nittany Lion goal less than a minute later off a MacKinney assist, her second of the day, to take the lead. With 52 seconds left, Kelly MacKinney scored her first goal of the game to extend the lead before halftime.
Third Quarter – PSU 7, Colorado 7
Freshman Payton Wainman scored her first goal of her career 34 seconds into the quarter, but Colorado responded less than a minute later. Gilmore notched a hat trick, scoring her third of the game with a free position goal, only to be followed by three consecutive Buffalo goals to bring the game back to a tie.
Fourth Quarter – PSU 9, Colorado 10
Colorado scored two goals less than a minute a part to extend the lead. The Nittany Lions responded with two goals in a minute with a goal by Abernathy, her first of the game, and a free position goal by Meghan Murray to notch her first of the game. The Buffalo's continued their scoring run with a goal with 6:48 left in the quarter.
