Two Hat Tricks Propel No. 14/13 Men's Lacrosse to 14-10 Win Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The No. 14/13 Penn State men's lacrosse team picked up their second straight win of the season with a 14-10 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions fired two straight goals in the first quarter off the sticks of Colby Baldwin just six seconds into the quarter and later by Luke Walstrum with 11:41 remaining to put Penn State ahead 2-0.
  • Stony Brook responded two minutes later with 9:30 left in the quarter off a goal by Noah Armitage to cut the Penn State lead to 2-1.
  • Then with 5:49 left in the quarter Matt Traynor fired his first goal of the game on the man-advantage to increase Penn State's lead to 3-1.
  • After the Seawolves scored with 4:49 remaining in the quarter, Mac Costin scored his first goal of the game with 2:51 left to continue Penn State's two goal lead.
  • Stony Brook closed the quarter with a goal by Ryan Barker with 2:20 left in the frame to make the score 4-3 in favor of Penn State.
  • The Nittany Lions came out firing in the second quarter with five unanswered goals including two by Mac Costin and one by Luke Mercer, Kyle Lehman, and Chris Jordan to put Penn state ahead 9-3 with 4:43 remaining in the half.
  • Stony Brook then answered with four unanswered goals to cut the Penn State lead to 9-7 with 11:49 left in the third quarter.
  • The Nittany Lions attack didn't halt for long as Penn State responded with four more unanswered goals including a pair by Traynor to put Penn State back in a comfortable 13-7 lead with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Seawolves closed the third with a pair of goals from Armitage and Justin Bonacci to make the score 13-9 Penn State.
  • Each side scored one goal in the fourth quarter which featured one by Jake Morin with 6:20 left in the quarter to secure the 14-10 victory. 

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior goalie Jack Fracyon picked up his second victory of the year tallying 10 saves.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Baldwin's opening goal that took six seconds was the fastest goal scored to open a game this season.
  • Matt Traynor and Mac Costin each tallied three goals in the win.
  • Will Peden recorded his fourth four point or more game in his career.
  • Penn State now leads the overall series with Stony Brook 10-2.
