Feature: A Quick Chat with Redshirt Freshman Mitchell Mesenbrink

In the world of collegiate wrestling, where intensity and relentless hard work remain a consistent theme, Mitchell Mesenbrink continues to prove his toughness throughout every bout. For Mesenbrink, a redshirt freshman from Hartland, Wis., his journey to Penn State and his approach to the sport reflect not only his passion for wrestling but also his commitment to embodying joy and kindness on and off the mat.

Mesenbrink's early introduction to wrestling came from growing up in a 'wrestling household'. He fondly recalls his earliest memories of grappling with stuffed animals under the watchful eye of his father, who also served as his coach. Wrestling became a household tradition, with Mesenbrink and his sisters all taking to the mat, instilling in him with a deep-rooted connection to the sport from a young age.

"I don't know wrestling without my dad," said Mesenbrink on growing up with his father as his coach. "He's always been there, not just as a coach but as a father who values emotional growth as much as athletic achievement."

His relationship with his father transcends the typical coach-athlete dynamic, characterized by mutual respect, emotional support, and an understanding that success extends beyond wins and losses.

Although his father was his coach for most of his early years, he always emphasized the importance of learning from other coaches as well as embracing different perspectives and advice. Therefore, transitioning from his father's guidance to the Penn State's vaunted coaching staff was a seamless process for Mesenbrink.

"When I stepped foot on Penn State's campus, it felt like coming home," said Mesenbrink. "I had dreamt of wrestling for Cael Sanderson since I was a kid, and now having the opportunity to learn from him, Cody (Sanderson), Casey (Cunningham) and Jimmy (Kennedy) is a dream come true."

Throughout his first regular season as a Penn State wrestler, Mesenbrink's approach to wrestling has been characterized by a sense of joy and enthusiasm. He brings a refreshing perspective to the sport, embracing the fun and camaraderie.

"I believe wrestling should be fun," Mesenbrink emphasizes. "There's room for intensity and competitiveness, but at the end of the day, we're all here because we love the sport. Why not enjoy every moment of it?"

As Mesenbrink approaches his first postseason as a Nittany Lion, his goals remain grounded in personal growth and self-improvement. While victories on the mat are undoubtedly valued, Mesenbrink's focus lies in being the best version of himself, both as a wrestler and as a person.

"For me, success isn't just about winning matches," said Mesenbrink. "It's about giving my all, embracing kindness, and finding joy in every aspect of life. Wrestling is just part of the journey, and I want to make sure I'm enjoying every step along the way."

Mesenbrink and his Nittany Lion teammates capped off a perfect 12-0 regular season in late February and now prepare for the 2024 Big Ten Championship on March 9-10.
