Women's Lacrosse Upsets No. 1 Northwestern Behind O'Neill OT Game Winner

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Kristin O'Neill recorded the game winning over time goal, with six goals on the night to notch 150 goals in her career and lead Penn State to a 14-13 overtime win against No. 1 Northwestern, their first win against a No. 1 ranked team since 2005.  

Penn State's win improves their record to 6-4 (2-0 Big Ten) while Northwestern moves to 8-2 (1-1 Big Ten).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – PSU 3, NU 3
Kristin O'Neill opened up scoring less than 15 seconds into the game for the Nittany Lions with an unassisted goal, her 26th goal of the season, however, Northwestern responded 30 seconds later with a goal by Dylan Amonte. 

With 11:35 left in the quarter, Kayla Abernathy scored her eighth goal of the season to give Penn State back the lead, followed up two minutes later by an unassisted goal from Payton Wainman.
Northwestern's Lindsey Frank responded with a goal a minute later, while Izzy Scane tied the game back up with an unassisted goal with 5:42 left in the quarter. 

Second Quarter – PSU 5, NU 7
The Wildcat's Erin Coykendall scored two minutes into the quarter to give them their first lead of the game, with another goal by Lucy Munro to add to the score. 
Amonte scored her second goal of the game with 9:40 left in the quarter, with Scane extending the lead four minutes later.  

O'Neill scored her second goal of the game to give the Nittany Lions their first goal of the quarter with 3:55 left to go.Penn State scored 1:30 later with a man-up goal by Erika Ho, her second of the season, and was assisted by Gretchen Gilmore.

Third Quarter – PSU 10, NU 10
Gilmore scored her first goal of the game just over a minute into the quarter to move the Nittany Lions within one of the Wildcats.
Madison Taylor scored for Northwestern with a free position goal with 10:56 left in the quarter, but a minute later Meghan Murray scored from a free position goal for her 13th goal of the season. 
Kelly MacKinney scored off a Abernathy assist 40 seconds later to tie the game up 8-8, with 9:14 left to go, however Taylor scored her second goal of the game soon after. 

With 5:53 left in the quarter, Abernathy scored her second goal of the game, to bring the score to 9-9.
O'Neill recorded her third goal of the game off of a MacKinney assist to give Penn State the lead with 2:30 to go in the quarter, however, Scane scored her third goal of the game about a minute later. 

Fourth Quarter – PSU 13, NU 13
Abernathy scored her third goal of the game unassisted, her third career hat trick, however, less than a minute later Northwestern's Scane notched her fourth goal of the game.
While Northwestern was a man down due to a yellow card, O'Neill scored her fourth goal of the game off of a free position shot with 6:28 left in the quarter. Scane came right back with a free position goal for the Wildcats, her fifth goal of the game.

O'Neill scored her fifth goal of the game off of a free position shot, but Coykendall evened up the game with her second goal of the night with 1:17 left in the quarter. 

Over Time – PSU 14, NU 13
Kristin O'Neill scored her sixth goal of the game off of a free position goal to score the golden goal with :47 left in over time.
 
GAME NOTES 

  • The Nittany Lions had seven different goal scorers, with O'Neill scoring six goals and Abernathy notching three, both respectively leading the way. Gilmore, Wainman, Ho, MacKinney and Murray all scoring one goal apiece to contribute to the scoring efforts. 
  • O'Neill now has 150 goals in her career and is currently ranked 12th all-time in program history. She is 17 points away from 200 in her career and has now recorded her 27th hat trick of her career. 
  • Gilmore is 10 points away from 100 in her career.
  • Abernathy is four points away from 50 in her career. She is also 18 draw controls away from 200 in her career. She recorded her third hat trick of her career. 
  • Northwestern held the advantage in shots, 36-28.
  • The defense scooped 16 ground balls.
  • Penn State recorded seven caused turnovers.
