No. 10/11 Men's Lacrosse Downs No. 8 Cornell 20-9

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 10/11 Penn State men's lacrosse team defeated No. 8 Cornell in a convincing 20-9 victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with 9:08 left in the opening quarter off goals by Luke Mercer, Mac Costin, Mark Sickler and Matt Traynor.
  • Cornell scored their first goal of the game with 8:37 left in the quarter off a goal by Hugh Kelleher to cut the Penn State lead to 4-1.
  • The Nittany Lions closed out the opening quarter with a pair of goals by Matt Traynor to put Penn State ahead 6-1.
  • Penn State fired four goals to opening the second quarter off goals by Mac Costin, TJ Malone, Matt Traynor and Will Peden to put the Nittany Lions up 10-1 with 4:41 left in the half.
  • Cornell then answered with three unanswered goals to narrow the Penn State lead to 10-4 with 0:54 remaining in the half.
  • TJ Malone closed the half with a goal with just 15 seconds remaining to give the Nittany Lions a commanding 11-4 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions would fire seven goals in the third quarter including three by Matt Traynor while holding Cornell to just three goals to give the Nittany Lions a convincing 18-7 lead after three quarters.
  • Both sides each tallied a pair of goals in the fourth quarter resulting in the 20-9 victory for Penn State.

GOALTENDER

  • Jack Fracyon stopped 14 shots while holding Cornell to just eight goals to pick up his fifth straight victory.

STATS AND NOTES

  • TJ Malone recorded his 200th career point off an assist he had off Matt Traynor's goal with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Malone becomes just the fourth Nittany Lions in program history to achieve 200 career points.
  • Matt Traynor scored a career-high eight points off a career-high seven goals and one assist.
  • This is Penn State's second straight victory over a ranked Cornell team.
  • Jack Fracyon allowed his fewest number of goals against a ranked team this season. 
  • Mark Sickler appeared in his first game this season and registered a goal.
