No. 11 Men's Lacrosse Tramples Michigan 14-8

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 11 Penn State men's lacrosse team had a strong showing against Michigan on Saturday afternoon defeating the Wolverines 14-8.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead just six seconds into the game off a goal by Matt Traynor.
  • Michigan answered two minutes later off a goal by Ryan Cohen to even the score at 1-1 with 12:42 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Penn State responded with back-to-back goals off the stick of Kyle Lehman to give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead with 8:28 remaining in the quarter.
  • Michigan closed out the first quarter with a goal from Michael Boehm with 0:08 remaining to narrow the Nittany Lion lead to 3-2.
  • Mac Costin opened the second quarter for the Nittany Lions with a goal coming with 11:03 remaining in the half to give Penn State a 4-2 lead.
  • Michigan countered with 9:05 remaining in the quarter off a goal by Christian Ronda to tighten the Penn State lead to 4-3.
  • The Nittany Lions would fire three unanswered goals including two by TJ Malone and one by Traynor to give Penn State a commanding 7-3 lead with 4:47 left in the first half.
  • Michigan and Penn State each recorded one goal to close the half to make the score 8-4 in favor of the Nittany Lions.
  • Kyle Lehman opened the second half with his third goal of the game to put Penn State ahead 9-4 with 13:15 left on the clock.
  • Michigan then scored two straight goals off the sticks of Justin Tiernan and Jack Whitley to shrink the Penn State lead to 9-6.
  • The Nittany Lions closed out the third quarter with three goals from TJ Malone and Jeb Brenfleck to put Penn State ahead 12-6 heading to the fourth quarter.
  • Both sides each put up two goals each in the fourth quarter resulting in the 14-8 victory for the Nittany Lions.

GOALTENDERS

  • Junior Jack Fracyon recorded a career-high 19 saves while allowing just eight goals. His record improved to 8-3 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • TJ Malone tallied his second seven-point game of the season with five goals and two assists.
  • Kyle Lehman recorded his third hat-trick of the year with three goals and one assist.
  • Penn State improves its record to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play.
  • This is eighth game this season the Nittany Lions have held a team to under 10 goals.
  • Penn State honored their 17 seniors prior to the start of the game.
