PARIS, France- The five current and former members of the Penn State swimming and diving program finished competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Nittany Lions who competed at the games were current student-athletes Jack Harvey and Eduardo Cisternas and PSU alumni Emma Harvey, Gabe Castano and Shane Ryan. The week consisted of one swimmer advancing to the semifinals of their event and one swimmer breaking their country’s national record in the event.
Jack Harvey had a solid performance in the 100 back, taking first in his heat with a score 55.78 to just miss the semifinals for his country of Bermuda. Eduardo Cisternas broke his own Chilean National Record in the 400 free with a time of 3:51.29. He came second in his heat, barely missing the semifinal berth. Cisternas broke his country’s national record with which he was the previous swimmer to set the time.
Emma Harvey also represented Bermuda in the 100 back. She finished 23rd with a score of 1:01.78. Gabe Castano swam for Team Mexico in the 50 free. His score of 21.89 allowed him to place 11th in the heats and advance to the semifinals as one of the 16th fastest swimmers in the world in that event. Later that day in the next round, Castano recorded a 21.99 in the semis to finish at a rank of 15. Shane Ryan competed in the 400 medley relay for Team Ireland. His relay squad secured a 3:33.81 with Ryan swimming the anchor leg. He recorded the fasted time in his squad with a 47.21. The Ireland 400 medley relay finished 11th in the trials.
