Men’s Soccer Drops Home Match Against Cornell

An own goal and a Caden Grabfelder goal accounted for Penn State’s scoring efforts

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s soccer concluded their four match homestand, falling to nonconference Cornell by a 3-2 margin at Jeffrey Field on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

Cornell opened scoring in the 15th minute after a Mohamed Cisset yellow card. Cisset fouled the Big Red’s Alex Harris. Cornell’s Connor Miller took the free kick outside of the box that went just past goalkeeper Andrew Cooke’s gloves.

Penn State responded nearly 20 seconds later after a Michael Hewes shot attempt was blocked by the Big Red’s keeper. Morgan Marshall attempted to return the shot, however a Cornell defender knocked the ball past his own keeper into the back of the net to level the match 1-1.

With 10 minutes left in the first half, Penn State was awarded a free kick outside of the box after a Cornell yellow card on Andrew Johnson. Caden Grabfelder was able to launch the ball over the wall of Big Red defenders to score his second goal of the season and to give Penn State the lead heading into halftime.

Second Half

Cornell controlled possession the majority of the second half. The Big Red leveled the match in the 49th minute from an Adam Schaban through ball to Harris.

Cornell gained the lead in the 57th minute after a Morgan Marshall foul in the box. Cornell was awarded a penalty kick and Harris struck the ball into the net.
