Men’s Soccer Downed by Indiana on the Road

Penn State will face Washington next week on Big Ten Plus

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Penn State men’s soccer conceded two goals in the second half to drop a 2-0 decision against Indiana at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions fall to 5-6-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers improve to 5-3-5 and 3-1-2 in conference play. Penn State falls behind in the all-time series 15-40-5 against Indiana. The Blue & White remain with eight points in the conference standings, while Indiana tacks on three more points to push away from Penn State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

Sophomore Caden Grabfelder had the first shot attempt of the match, launching a powerful shot from outside of the box but going off the right goal post.

Penn State had a scoring opportunity at the 30th minute when Michael Hewes drew a foul at the 15. Indiana’s defense was able to successfully block Grabfelder’s attempt to keep the score level at 0.

Indiana thought they had the first goal of the match, but the official called offsides. After a lengthy video review, the call on the pitch was confirmed.

The Hoosiers’ held the 5-4 edge on shots and the 4-1 advantage on corner kicks. Indiana was called offsides four times in the first half.

SECOND HALF

Indiana got on the board first in the 67th minute. Charlie Heuer came off the bench a knocked the loose ball behind Andrew Cooke for the 1-0 advantage.

Heuer drilled his second goal of the match past Cooke in the 76th minute.

The Nittany Lions had a scoring opportunity when Christian Dionne drew a foul outside on the Hoosier box in the 87th minute. Matthew Henderson passed the ball to Freddie ball who shot the ball above the goal.

Indiana was able to hold on their 2-0 lead for the Big Ten victory at home.

MATCH NOTES

  • Mohamed Cisset made his return to the starting lineup.
  • Indiana had the 14-6 advantage on shots and 7-2 authority on corner kicks. The Hoosiers had all five shots on goal in the match.
  • Cooke collected three saves in the 90 minutes.
  • Grabfelder led the Nittany Lions offensively with two shots. Ben Liscum, Camara, Hewes and Bell all had one a piece.
