KICKIN’ IT

Five different goal scorers found the back of the net, with four goals coming in a dominant second-half performance as No. 20 Penn State throttled the Maryland Terrapins in Big Ten Conference action from Ludwig Field Thursday night. The Nittany Lion victory ensured the 31st-consecutive 10-win campaign in program history, with PSU winning at least 10 matches in every season of its varsity existence. As a squad, Penn State was astonishing in practically every facet of the match, highlighted by dominant margins on the shot chart and in terms of shots on goal. PSU attempted 17 total shots in the hostile road environment, placing 11 of those tries on target. The Nittany Lions out-shot Maryland 17-9 overall with a striking 9-1 differential in on-target opportunities. In the corner kick competition, both squads managed a quintet of tries apiece, with Penn State improving to 3-2-0 in 2024 when matching their opponent’s chances from the corner.

The Nittany Lion women's soccer program saw a trio of student-athletes earn placements in the TopDrawerSoccer Midseason Top 100 Player rankings, with redshirt senior forward Kaitlyn MacBean highlighting the Nittany Lion selections as the No. 4 player in the nation according to the organization's release. PSU also saw senior defender and captain Mieke Schiemann reach the No. 50 ranking, while graduate defender Ginger Fontenot rounded out the PSU selections with the No. 80 choice. For the second year in a row, Penn State University and the Bellisario College of Communications will host the only Spanish-language broadcast of the year on B1G+, with Juan Mendez returning to Jeffrey Field after calling multiple matches at PSU a season ago alongside Milena Velez, who becomes the first woman to broadcast a B1G+ event in Spanish in the platform's history.

TOP OF THE TOPDRAWER

The Penn State women's soccer program placed a trio of student-athletes on the TopDrawerSoccer Midseason Top 100 Players list released earlier this week, highlighted by redshirt senior forward Kaitlyn MacBean's placement at No. 4 in the nation. MacBean ranks as one of the most dominant scorers in the nation, with the Excelsior, Minnesota, native placing as the second-highest ranked forward in the country and second-highest ranked B1G athlete. Senior defender Mieke Schiemann placed 50th in the midseason poll, with the Berlin, Germany, native serving as a dangerous scoring threat from set pieces while anchoring one of the nation's top defensive units. Graduate defender and Penn transfer Ginger Fontenot has been one of the strongest on-ball defenders in women's college soccer over the course of the 2024 campaign, with the Ventura, California, native starting all 15 matches for the Blue & White this year. Fontenot garnered the first major national recognition of her career this week, placing at No. 80 in the midseason rankings.

MATCHING MINNESOTA

Led by head coach Erin Chastain, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are off to one of their strongest starts in recent history, as the Minneapolis-based squad owns a 9-2-3 overall record with a 3-2-2 mark against B1G competitors. PSU will welcome back its seventh all-time leading scorer in Golden Gopher Associate Head Coach Maya Hayes, who earned a promotion at UMN over the offseason. Minnesota is fresh off its most impressive performance of the 2024 season to date earlier this week, with the Golden Gophers publishing a 3-2 upset of the eighth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on the road in Columbus Thursday night, the first nationally ranked win for the program since 2019. Senior forward Khyah Harper has been a national star for the Golden Gopher program in 2024, with the veteran striker standing atop the Big Ten Conference in goal scoring and total points with 15 goals and 33 points scored, respectively. Paige Kalal leads the team with eight assists, while Sarah Martin boasts a 9-2-3 record in goal with 43 saves.

STORY OF THE SERIES

Penn State and Minnesota gear up for the 33rd all-time meeting in a series which dates to the program's inaugural campaign in 1994. The Blue & White and the Golden Gophers will meet on the pitch for the first time since the fall of 2021, a Minnesota win in Minneapolis. In the last five matchups against Minnesota, the Nittany Lions own an impressive 3-1-1 lead overall with all three of those PSU victories coming in regular season matchups. In the most recent pair of matchups on Jeffrey Field, Penn State picked up a pair of wins with a 2-0 victory on October 21, 2018, followed by an impressive 3-0 win over the Gophers on March 18, 2021. The most recent meeting between Penn State and Minnesota in the fall of 2021 saw the Golden Gophers pick up a 4-1 win at home in Minneapolis, with Riley Gleason finding the back of the net for her first collegiate goal on the only PSU tally in the contest.
