THIS WEEK

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team (6-3, 1-0 B1G), hits the road for two Big Ten games this weekend. Penn State is at Iowa (5-3, 0-2 B1G) on Friday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. Eastern and then visits Northwestern (10-0, 3-0*) on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. Eastern. *Northwestern hosts Rutgers on Friday as well.

The Nittany Lions are coming off another two-win weekend. Penn State opened up the week with a 3-2 win over visiting Indiana in its Big Ten opener on Friday, Sept. 27. Two days later, the Nittany Lions downed visiting Lafayette 5-1 for their sixth straight win.

Phia Gladieux continues to lead Penn State (and the nation) in scoring. Gladieux had three goals and two assists in last weekend’s games and has scored at least one goal in every game this year. She has 34 points off 15 goals and four assists. Julienne van Bekkum has eight points off two goals and four assists while Sophia Mannino has five off two and one. Freshman goalie Aby Deverka has 48 saves with a .727 percentage this season, having played in eight of Penn State’s nine games.

Iowa heads into the weekend with a 5-3 mark, 0-2 in the Big Ten. Iowa dropped a 3-2 (1-3 shootout) game at Rutgers last Friday then rebounded for a 2-0 in at Villanova on Sunday. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series with Penn State 33-28-1.

Northwestern, which hosts Rutgers on Friday, enters the weekend with a perfect 10-0 overall record, 3-0 in the conference. The Wildcats  won at Maryland last Friday, 1-0, then beat Princeton 3-2 in New Jersey. Only two teams have scored on NU this year. Penn State owns a 34-8-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Penn State continues a four-game road swing next weekend, visiting Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m. and Ohio University on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 12 p.m. for a non-conference game..

GLADIEUX NAMED B1G OFFENSIVE A.o.W. (9/29)
Phia Gladieux was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 29, 2024. Gladieux had an eight point weekend, leading the Nittany Lions to wins over Indiana (3-2) and Lafayette (5-1) at the Field Hockey Complex. She had a goal and an assist vs. IU on Friday (9/27) and two goals and an assist against the Leopards two days later (9/29).
 
FOUR DIFFERENT NITTANY LIONS SCORE
IN 5-1 WIN OVER LAFAYETTE
Four different Penn Staters scored goals in Penn State’s 5-1 non-conference win over visiting Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 29. Phia Gladieux had two goals and an assist, Natalie Freeman scored for the second time this year, Julienne van Bekkum picked up her second goal of the season and Morgan McMenamin tallied her first career goal in the victory. Katelyn Strawser and van Bekkum also had assists while freshman goalie Aby Deverka had six saves.
 
PENN STATE DOWNS INDIANA 3-2 IN B1G OPENER
Penn State held on for a 3-2 win over visiting Indiana on Friday, Sept. 27, in the conference opener for the Nittany Lions. Natalie Freeman and Phia Gladieux scored in the first half to give Penn State a 2-1 lead at the break. Drew Taylor notched a third quarter goal that proved to be the difference in the 3-2 win.
 
PENN STATE DOWNS BUCKNELL 2-1 IN OT ON
GLADIEUX’S TWO LATE GOALS
Penn State trailed homestanding Bucknell into the fourth quarter on Sept. 22 in Lewisburg, 1-0. But senior Phia Gladieux scored twice late to lead the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 come from behind win in overtime. Gladieux tied the game up in the fourth period and then scored just over 1:00 into extra time to carry Penn State to victory.
 
GLADIEUX NOTCHES 10 POINTS IN TWO GAMES AS LIONS BEAT KENT STATE AND NO. 15 PRINCETON
Senior Phia Gladieux continued to dominate the competition, collecting 10 points in two games as the Nittany Lions won twice over the weekend. Gladieux has now scored in every one of Penn State’s six games. Gladieux scored two goals and had an assist in Penn State’s 4-1 win at Kent State on Friday. Two days later, Penn State welcomed No. 15 Princeton to the Penn State Field Hockey Complex and Gladieux notched five points again. She scored Penn State’s first two goals, both unassisted, to keep PSU close to the Tigers. She then set up Sophia Mannino’s game winning goal with 1:14 left, getting the assist, in the 3-2 win over the ranked Tigers.
PENN STATE TAKES DOWN NO. 15 PRINCETON;
DEVERKA’S SEVEN SAVES EARNS B1G HONORS
Phia Gladieux twice and assisted on the third goal as Penn State rallied late for a 3-2 win over No. 15 Princeton on Sept. 15. Gladieux and Madison Tambroni teed up Sophia Mannino for the game winner with just over 1:00 to play, capping off the rally for the win. Freshman keeper Aby Deverka had seven saves in the game as well. Her seven saves against the ranked Tigers earned her a second Big Ten Rookie of the Week award (for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024).
 
NITTANY LIONS PICK UP ROAD WIN AT KENT STATE
Phia Gladieux scored twice and had an assist in Penn State’s 4-1 win at Kent State on Sept. 13. Senior keeper Lauren Delgado had two saves and picked up her first win in the cage for the Lions. Joining Gladieux with goals were senior Sophia Mannino and junior Ella Jennes.

VAN BEKKUM’S GOALS, LEAD LIONS TO WIN AT UD
Phia Gladieux scored three times, including the game winner late, and true freshman Katelyn Strawser and grad student Julienne van Bekkum each picked up their first goals as Nittany Lions, to lead Penn State to a 5-4 win at Delaware.
GLADIEUX SCORES TWICE, DEVERKA TALLIES 14 SAVES IN TOP-TEN OPENING WEEKEND
Senior Phia Gladieux scored goals in each of Penn State’s opening weekend games and true freshman Aby Deverka collected 14 total saves against two top-ten ACC opponents. Gladieux had Penn State’s goal (from a Julienne van Bekkum assist) and Deverka had 11 saves in Penn State’s 2-1 loss to No. 3 Virginia on opening night, Friday, Aug. 30. Two days later on Sept. 1, Gladieux scored again and Deverka had three saves in a 2-1 loss to No. 10 Syracuse.
 
DEVERKA EARNS B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
HONORS ON OPENING WEEKEND
True freshman Aby Deverka tallied 14 saves against No. 3 Virginia and No. 10 Syracuse on opening weekend for Penn State, her first collegiate games. Starting from the onset, Deverka had 11 saves against the third-ranked Cavaliers and three against No. 10 Syracuse and was honored as Big Ten Freshman of the Week (9/3/24) to begin the season.
 
SENIOR TRIO NAMED 2024 TEAM CAPTAINS
The Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey team voted seniors Phia Gladieux, Julia Lamb and Drew Taylor as team captains during the second week of preseason practice. This marks the first time each of these Nittany Lions has been voted captain by her teammates.
