UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Women’s Tennis will head to Ithaca, N.Y. for the Cornell Invitational, running from Friday, Oct. 25 to Sunday, Oct. 27. At the tournament, Penn State will face off against Cornell, Syracuse, Niagara and LeMoyne.
Maiko Uchijima, Kate Zink, Deanna Lasorda and Jordina Cegarra will represent Penn State at the competition.
Uchijima was named a Penn State Student-Athlete of the Week (Oct. 21) alongside Olivia Dorner for their performance at the ITA Northeast Regional. The No. 49 ranked doubles pair went 6-0 to earn the doubles championship and a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships. They were the team’s first regional winners and NCAA Individual Championships qualifiers since 2012. The tandem is 10-1 on the season.
Dorner and Uchijima defeated Penn’s Eileen Wang and Sabine Rutlauka (1-6, 6-4, 10-7) in the championship. The other victories came over Seton Hall’s Rachel Benoualid and Isabelle May (8-3), Fordham’s Lilianna Chitambar and Lorraine Bergmann (8-4), Princeton’s Pearlie Zhang and Isabella Chhiv (8-1) and Penn’s Gavriella Smith and Saige Roshkoff (8-0) and Esha Velaga and Lara Stojanovski (6-2, 6-3).
Dorner earned Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors (Oct. 16) for her doubles play and a Round of 16 finish in singles competition at the ITA Northeast Regional. She beat Fordham’s Chitambar (6-1, 6-2) and Mercyhurst’s Kayla Dean (6-1, 3-6, 6-1).
Cegarra reached the doubles quarterfinals alongside Patricia Grigoras. They earned victories in three matches against Hofstra’s Lea Forste-Dinell and Amanda Kadiri (8-0), Drexel’s Beatriz Ibrahim and Sofia Snitko (8-0) and Columbia’s Gayathri Krishnan and Sophia Strugnell (8-2).
