Men’s Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale at Northwestern

Freshman Malick Daouda scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions

EVANSTON, Ill. – Penn State men’s soccer dropped a 4-1 decision against Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium. Freshman Malick Daouda scored his second goal of his rookie campaign to prevent a Wildcats shutout.

Penn State will finish the 2024 season 5-9-2 and 2-6-2 in the Big Ten. Northwestern improves to 9-7-1 and 3-6-1 in conference play. Despite the loss, the Blue & White remain ahead in the all-time series, 22-7-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

Northwestern controlled possession in the first half, capitalizing on two scoring opportunities.

SECOND HALF

The Wildcats were able to put themselves by three goals, before the Nittany Lions were able to get on to the board. Daouda sent a rocket from the middle of the box directly into the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

Northwestern was able to defend Penn State from any more goals, but were able to get one off themselves to win the match, 4-1.

MATCH NOTES

  • Sean Bettenhausen and Ben Liscum made their return to the Starting XI. Bettenhausen has started three matches this season, while Liscum has made 14 starts in 2024.
  • Freshman Sebastian Delacruz, sophomore Conrad Brady and redshirt-sophomore Sebastian Vainstein registered career highs in minutes. Delacruz collected 21, Brady played seven and Vainstein earned 24 minutes, respectively.
  • Northwestern held the 15-8 shot advantage and the 6-2 edge on corner kicks.
  • Malick Daouda and Ben Madore led the offensive efforts with two shots.
  • Andrew Cooke started the first half in net registering three saves. Fredrick Grundin made two saves in the second half.
