No. 12 Women's Hockey Draws with St. Thomas, 1-1 to Conclude Smashville Tournament

Penn State won the shootout 1-0 in seven rounds.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–The No. 12 Penn State women’s ice hockey team (13-4-1 overall) concluded the 2024 Smashville Women’s Collegiate Hockey Showcase with a 1-1 tie against St. Thomas (5-11-2 overall) on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won the shootout 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After two scoreless periods, St. Thomas scored the first goal of the game as Maddy Cough flipped the puck over the Penn State goalie in front to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead with 15:34 left in the frame.
  • In the final two minutes of regulation, Maddy Christian guided the puck to push it past the St. Thomas goalie to even the game at 1-1 with 1:29 remaining in the third period.
  • Neither team could score in overtime as the game went to a shootout. Katelyn Roberts scored the winning shootout goal in the seventh round to give the Nittany Lions the shootout win.

GOALTENDERS

  • Goalie Lauren Barbro made 30 saves on 31 shots. Her record moves to 3-0-1 on the year.  
  • St. Thomas goalie Dani Storm recorded 33 saves on 34 shots attempted. Her record becomes 2-9-2 this season. 

STATS AND NOTES

  • Christian tallied her 12th goal of the season, which places her tied for seventh in the nation. 
  • This is Penn State’s first tie since February 17, 2024, where they tied 1-1 to RIT. 
  • The all-time series between the Tommies and Nittany Lions stands at 0-0-1.
  • St. Thomas outshot the Nittany Lions 37-34. It’s the first time this season a team has outshot Penn State.
  • Penn State went 1-6 on the power-play, which is the seventh straight game the Nittany Lions have scored a power-play goal.
  • Tessa Janecke registered her 125th point with an assist which places her 12 points behind the all-time leader in Natalie Heising.
