UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's and women's fencing teams competed Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational in Philadelphia. The Nittany Lion men’s team went 2-2 as did the Nittany Lion women’s team.
Penn State vs. NYU- In the match against NYU, Penn State's men’s team posted a win in epee (6-3) but fell in foil (6-3) and saber (5-4) to drop a close 14-13 dual. The women's team showcased their skills and won 14-13 their dual versus NYU, winning in foil (5-4) and saber (5-4) but fell in epee (5-4)
Penn State vs. UCSD- In the match against UCSD, Penn State's men’s team won a close dual 14-13 winning in foil (5-4) and saber (6-3) but fell in epee (6-3). The women's team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to UCSD with a final score of 9-18. Falling in epee (5-4) saber (7-2) and foil (6-3)
Penn State vs. Ohio State- The men's fencing team fought hard but were defeated by OSU with a final score of 13-14. They had dominate win in foil (7-2) and saber (5-4) but fell in epee (8-1). The women's fencing team delivered a strong performance against Ohio State, narrowly losing in epee (5-4), saber (6-3), and foil (7-2), resulting in an overall score of 9-18.
Penn State vs Haverford- Penn State notched a commanding win against Haverford. The men’s team rolled to a 20-7 win as it dominated in epee (6-3), saber (9-0), and foil (5-4). The women's team delivered a clean sweep in foil (9-0), a strong win in saber (8-1), and a winning performance in epee (5-4). Penn State emerged victorious with an overall score of 22-5.
Both teams will continue to compete in Philadelphia tomorrow. Following this weekend’s action, Penn State Fencing hosts Penn, Temple, North Carolina, Columbia, Harvard, Duke and Yale at the Multi-Sport Facility with action beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
