Penn State moved to 1-0 on the season with a 316.900-306.500 win over Army. Despite trailing after the first two rotations, the Nittany Lions stormed back to pull out the victory. Junior Matt Underhill posted a season-high 14.200 on rings to help turn the tide, all while earning the event title for the third consecutive outing.
Graduate student Kellen Ryan posted his first ever event title with a 13.950 on vault. He also posed the second highest ring score at the meet with a 13.250, a new career high. For his efforts, he was named received the event’s Gene Wettstone award, which highlights the most outstanding athlete of the meet.
On parallel bars, Penn State took home more than a four-point victory at the event. Ian Raubal, Matt Cormier, Michael Jaroh, and Josh Karnes each earned stick bonus for a perfect sweep of the rotation. Jaroh posted the top score at 13.950 for his second event title of the afternoon.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
William & Mary made week two count with a first-place finish at the Navy Open following a fifth-place finish at the West Point Open. The Tribe bested Navy and Springfield at the event for a season-best score of 306.150.
Penn State and William & Mary met each other in week one of the 2025 season, facing off at the West Point Open. At the meet, the Tribe’s Zachary Patrick posted a career-best 13.700 on parallel bars to finish second in the event.
MEETING HISTORY
Penn State has never lost to the Tribe in a series that dates back to 1984, with the all-time record at 12-0. The Nittany Lions took a 396.400-382.750 victory over William & Mary in the teams last head-to-head meeting, which came in the 2023 season. Penn State also hosted the Tribe in a double dual meet that season, where the Blue and White won 400.900-386.000, taking every event title.
2025 SEASON PREVIEW
The Nittany Lions entered their 2025 campaign ranked sixth in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Preseason Coaches Poll.
Head coach Randy Jepson returns for his 34th season at the helm of the program along with associate head coach Tony Beck (ninth season) and assistant coach Carlos Vazquez (13th season).
Penn State finished their 2024 season 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. The team has 14 returners including All-Americans Josh Karnes, Michael Artlip, and Luke Esparo.
Karnes finished the 2024 season as an NCAA Bronze Medalist following his third-place finish in the parallel bars at the national championships.
Karnes along with graduate student Matt Cornier were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch after stellar regular and off seasons.
The team has a new face. Graduate Student Kellen Ryan will make his debuts with the Nittany Lions, joining the program from the University of Minnesota.
