Men's Tennis Defeats Temple, Sweeps Fordham in Home Opener Doubleheader

Freshmen Reiya Hattori, David Lindsay, Marcus Schoeman carry big wins in collegiate debuts

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State Men’s Tennis team defeated Temple, 4-3, and Fordham, 7-0, in its first match day of the season. 

 

Impressive performances by Freshmen Reiya Hattori, David Lindsay and Marcus Schoeman helped the Nittany Lions claim wins in their collegiate debuts. 

 

TEMPLE 

Doubles 

Duo Marcus Schoeman and Reiya Hattori took court three, but dropped their match 6-3 to Dante Russon and Maj Najvirt Kolaric. At the top spot, Charl Morgan and David Lindsay took on Martin Marujo and Adam Kresina, but fell 6-4.

Playing at No. 2 doubles, Sam Bossem and Loren Byers partnered up and were leading 5-4 against Temple’s Pranav Nemani and Aayush Bhat when the match went unfinished.

Singles 

Taking court one, Byers played a strong match, defeating Marujo 6-4, 6-3.  

Schoeman played court four, defeating Bhat in a battle of a match, 6-4, 7-6(6). 

Hattori played in at the fifth spot, winning a stellar 6-0, 6-2 match against Nemani. 

Lindsay, took court six, defeating Russon in a great 6-4, 6-4 match. 

Morgan played in at second singles, taking his first set to a match play and battling tough. Despite a 7-6(1), 6-7(4), 5-2 impressive fight, the match went unfinished. 

At the third spot, Bossem dropped his match 6-2, 6-2 against Najvirt Kolaric. 

 

FORDHAM 

Doubles 

At first doubles, duo Morgan and Lindsay grabbed the 6-2 win over Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and Dhanajay Athreya of Fordham.  

Bossem and Byers took the court to defeat Philip Uhde and Filip Horak 6-3. 

On court three, partners Hattori and Schoeman played a quick 6-1 match against Nicolas Garneir and Andro Barrientos. 

Penn State claimed the doubles point. 

 

Singles 

At the top spot, Byers defeated Virdee-Oakley in a 6-3, 6-3 match. 

Stepping up at second singles, Schoeman fought a long battle, ultimately claiming the victory 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 against Athreya. 

Hattori played up on court three, defeating Horak in a strong 6-0, 6-2 matchup. 

At the fourth spot, Lindsay played quickly, grabbing the 6-3, 6-0 win over Uhde. 

Freshman Shrikeshav Murugesan made his collegiate debut on court five against Garneir, winning 6-3, 6-2. 

Also making his collegiate debut, freshman Denys Forgaci stepped in at the sixth spot, defeating Stefan Stojanovic 6-2, 6-2.

The Nittany Lions will continue their doubleheader weekend at home with matches on Sunday, Jan. 26 against Quinnipiac at 9:30 a.m. and Bucknell at 2:30 p.m.
