ROSEMONT, Ill. – Junior Arsenii Sergeev (Yaroslavl, Russia) was named Big Ten Hockey’s First Star of the Week for his performances against Notre Dame over the weekend as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning.
Sergeev earns his first career Big Ten weekly award joining John Seifarth (Dec. 3), Aiden Fink (Nov. 26) and Simon Mack (Oct. 8) who were each honored by the conference earlier this season.
Sergeev backstopped Penn State to its first Big Ten series win of the season as the Nittany Lions took 4-of-6 points from Notre Dame over the weekend. The junior tallied a season-high 43 saves in a 3-3 tie at Wrigley Field on Friday night to match his career-high before pitching a 34-save shutout on Sunday during a 3-0 victory in South Bend.
After missing the last seven games with a lower-body injury, Sergeev stopped 77-of-80 shots over the two games in his return to the crease posting a .963 save percentage and a 1.44 goals-against average in the series against the Irish.
The Yaroslavl, Russia native also chipped in offensively with a pair of secondary assists on the weekend with one in each game marking the first time a Nittany Lion net-minder has registered points in back-to-back games.
Sergeev becomes just the fourth Penn State goaltender all-time to register multiple points as he now sits fourth all-time with two while his two helpers this season are tied for the third-most points in a single season for a goalie at Penn State.
Sergeev raised his save percentage by .016 over the weekend as he now sits fourth in the Big Ten and tied for 19th nationally at .922 while his 2.16 goals-against average ranks fifth in the Big Ten and good for 24th in the nation.
The Nittany Lions continue Big Ten play this weekend as they open a six-game homestand with a series against No. 1 Michigan State on Friday and Saturday evening. Tickets for each game can be purchased HERE.
