Women's Golf Heads West for Westbrook Invitational in Arizona

The Penn State women's golf team makes a trip out west to Arizona and the Westbrook Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin this weekend.

PEORIA, Ariz.  – The Penn State women's golf team makes a trip out west to Arizona and the Westbrook Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin this weekend.

The Nittany Lions last competed in the event during the 2022-23 season finishing 10th in the 14-team.

The tournament is held at the Westbrook Village Golf Club’s Vistas Course with 36 continuous holes of play on Sunday followed by a single round on Monday. Both days will feature an 8:30 a.m. MT shotgun start.

The classic par-72, 6,248-yard course has everything you could ever want in a golf course from desert transition areas, guarded greens, water shots to its risk reward drivable par 4.

THE TEAM

  • Senior Drew Nienhaus (St. Louis, Mo.) is the lone Nittany Lion to compete in the event two years ago as she finished the week 12-over (74-77-77) and in 70th position as a sophomore in a senior-heavy lineup.
  • Nienhaus will tee it up again this weekend with fellow seniors Michelle Cox (Allentown, Pa.), and Jami Morris (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) while junior Myranda Quinton (Burlington, Ontario) and freshman Jiratchaya Jiratthitinun (Bangkok, Thailand) round out the starting five with freshman Gwendolyn Powell (Madison Township, Pa.) competing as an individual.
  • Both Nienhaus and Cox had a strong start to the spring season three weeks ago at the PDI Intercollegiate in Orlando, Florida each finishing with bogey-free final rounds of 6-under, 66, and 4-under, 68, respectively.
  • Cox finished the week tied for 11th at 7-under, 209, the second-best score relative to par of her career and tied for the eighth lowest in program history. Nienhaus finished the week tied for 22nd after carding her lowest score relative to par of the year at 5-under, 211. Her final round 66 was the second-best of her career and tied for the third lowest 18-hole score in Penn State history.
  • Quinton also played some of her best golf in Orlando finishing the week 6-over, 222, the lowest score relative to par for her career, highlighted by a career-low 2-under, 70, in the second round.
  • Penn State finished the week 3-under, 861, good for 11th in the 17-team field to open the month, however, the 3-under, 861, score is tied for the sixth lowest 54-hole total in program history.
  • Nienhaus is currently leading the team with a 73.24 stroke average only slightly above the 73.28 of Jiratthitinun while Cox is averaging a 73.83 through six events this season.

OPPONENTS

  • Penn State is joined in the field this week by Big Ten foes Minnesota and Nebraska along with the host Badgers.
  • Colorado State, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisiana Monroe, Missouri, Sam Houston, South Florida, Tennessee Chattanooga, Washington State and UNLV round out the 14-team field.
