LAS VEGAS - Penn State Women’s Tennis (8-1) took down UNLV (7-2) in a 4-3 decision on Sunday from the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas. The Nittany Lions ripped off four straight singles victories to secure their second win in as many days.
UNLV took the doubles point. Senior Yvonne Zuffova and freshman Jelena Vico dropped their match against Sofiia Sokolvak and Kaho Oyama 6-0 on court three. On court one, No. 77 Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima fell 6-3 to Nikol Mircheva and Hanna Vinahradava. Sophomore Jordina Cegarra and freshman Patricia Grigoras left their match unfinished on court two against Cindy Hu and Coco Zhao.
Cegarra competed on court six for singles. She earned a quick 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vinahradava to make the score even at one. Vico grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 win on court four against Mircheva to make it 2-1 in favor of Penn State.
At the three spot, Grigoras made it three in a row when she gutted out a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Zhao. Uchijima clinched the match for the Nittany Lions in a tight, three-set match against Veronika Kliuch on court two. She came from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Zuffova and Dorner fell in hard-fought, three-set matches on courts five and one respectively.
Penn State concludes nonconference play on the road against Princeton on Saturday, March 1.
