Baseball Earns 11-6 Win At Georgetown

Kling collects five hits; Shenosky fires four no-hit innings

TYSONS, Va. – The Penn State baseball team earned an 11-6 win over Georgetown on Wednesday evening at Capital One Park. The Nittany Lions and the Hoyas split the two-game, midweek series. Paxton Kling tallied five hits, while Jesse Jaconski and Nate Voss homered. Skip Shenosky fired four no-hit innings. Penn State moved to 12-3 on the year.

 

With a 12-3 record, Penn State is off to its best 15-game start since going 13-2 to begin the 1979 season.

 

Penn State has tallied 10+ runs in 10 games this season. PSU has 10 games of 10+ runs within the first 15 games of a season for the first time since 1957 when PSU finished as NCAA Runner-Up.

 

The Nittany Lions scored in five-straight innings between the third and seventh, including four runs in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

 

Skip Shenosky got the start for the Nittany Lions, firing four no-hit, shutout innings. He allowed just one walk, while striking out one. Shenosky did not allow a batter to reach until a fourth-inning walk.

 

Riley Weatherwax threw one inning, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks. Brandon Wingenroth fired a scoreless inning and struck out two. Sean Williams threw two perfect innings, retiring all six batters he faced. Carson Renner went two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs (all unearned) and striking out two. Anthony Steele got the final out of the ninth on a strikeout.

 

Griffin O’Connor started for Georgetown, going three innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking two. Andrew Jergins went two innings, giving up four runs on three hits. Andrew Citron tossed 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Ethan Rucker went 1.2 scoreless frames and recorded three strikeouts. Ryan DeMartin threw a scoreless ninth inning.

 

Penn State recorded 11 runs on 15 hits. Kling went five-for-five at the plate with two doubles, three RBI and two runs, while adding two steals. Voss launched a two-run homer, while Jaconski added a solo shot. Ryan Weingartner had two hits, including a double, three runs and two steals. Bryce Molinaro contributed three hits and two RBI, while Cole Wagner drove in three runs.

 

Kling’s five hits are a career high and PSU’s first five-hit day since Jay Harry’s six knocks against Michigan State in 2022.

 

Georgetown tallied six runs on three hits. Ashtin Gilio blasted a solo homer.

 

The Nittany Lions exploded for four runs in the third. Cohl Mercado and Weingartner started the inning with back-to-back walks. Kling hit a line drive into left-center and hustled to second as Mercado scored from third. Molinaro followed with a single into right to bring in Weingartner. Molinaro stole second before a double into the right-field corner by Wagner brought in two runs. PSU led 4-0.

 

Penn State added two runs in the fourth. With one out, Mercado and Weingartner worked back-to-back walks again. The duo stole second and third before Kling lifted a sac fly into shallow center to bring home Mercado. Molinaro laced a single into center to drive in Weingartner and extend the PSU lead to 6-0.

 

The Nittany Lions plated two runs in the fifth. With two outs, Jack Porter worked a walk. Voss followed with a fly ball over the wall in left. Voss’ 365-foot homer put PSU ahead, 8-0.

 

Georgetown answered with three runs in the bottom half. Gilio led off the inning with a homer to right-center. After a walk by Noah Leib, Jaden Sheffield was hit by a pitch. A double play moved Leib to third. Blake Schaaf was hit by a pitch. An error on a throw to third resulted in Leib scoring and Schaaf moving up to third. Dylan Larkins reached on a walk. On a pickoff play, a throwing error allowed Schaaf to cross the plate. PSU led 8-3 through five.

 

Penn State added two runs in the sixth. Weingartner and Kling started the inning with back-to-back doubles with Weingartner scoring on Kling’s two-bagger. Molinaro reached on an infield single. Molinaro and Kling stole second and third before Wagner bounced into a groundout, but allowed Kling to score. The Nittany Lions held a 10-3 lead.

 

The Nittany Lions extended their lead in the seventh on a leadoff solo homer by Jaconski. The 410-foot blast pushed the PSU advantage to 11-3.

 

Georgetown plated three runs in the ninth. Christian Hamilton and Luke Bauer were hit by pitches to start the inning. Sho Garcia bounced into a fielder’s choice, with an error allowing Hamilton to score and Bauer to go to third. A wild pitch allowed Bauer to cross the plate and a single by Larkins brought in Garcia to cut the PSU lead to 11-6.

 

Penn State visits Northwestern for a three-game Big Ten series next weekend, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
