Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 5 Maryland

Senior Brooke Hoss led the Nittany Lions offense with three goals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Despite leading after the first quarter, Maryland’s scoring runs were too much for PSU to surmount. With the 19-11 loss, Penn State moves to 2-6, (0-1 Big Ten) while Maryland improves to 5-1 (1-0 Big Ten).

Brooke Hoss led the Nittany Lions in scoring with a hat-trick while also adding one assist. The trio of Erika Ho, Ellie Wisch, and Lauren Saltz put up two goals apiece. Ho also won three draw controls, caused two turnovers and scooped two ground balls while Saltz won two draws and collected one ground ball. Elise Smigiel and Emma Kelly tallied one goal each to round out the scoring. Kelly led the Blue and White in draw control wins with five on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Quarter 1 – Penn State 4, Maryland 3

While Maryland added the first goal on its first possession, the Nittany Lions went on a 3-0 scoring run to grab the advantage using goals from Elise Smigiel, Erika Ho, and Emma Kelly. The Terrapins responded with two unanswered goals of their own to knot the score at 3-3.

Penn State had the final word of the quarter with Brooke Hoss finding the back of the net off a feed from Kelly MacKinney.

Quarter 2 – Penn State 8, Maryland 10 

The Lions opened the second stanza on another 3-0 scoring stretch. Lauren Saltz found the back of the net on two occasions during the period, and Ellie Wisch notched her first of the day. One of Saltz’s goals was a free position while the other was assisted by MacKinney who also fed Wisch’s score.

Maryland then added six-straight goals to recapture the lead at 9-7. Ho found her second goal of the day on an unassisted laser past the Maryland keeper. The Terps put the final point across with 0:15 on the clock to seal the halftime advantage.

Quarter 3 – Penn State 8, Maryland 16

Maryland started hot out of the break, scoring six consecutive goals to pull away and create an eight-point deficit. The Terps held PSU from scoring for the entirety of the quarter.

Quarter 4 – Penn State 11, Maryland 19

Hoss and Wisch’s goals were interrupted by two goals from the Terps, drawing the score to 18-10 at the 7:33 mark. Each team added one more goal through the rest of the quarter. Hoss’s goal with 41 seconds on the clock was the final score of the contest, making the final score 19-11 in favor of Maryland.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

  • Freshman Brooke Long scored her first career assist in the contest.
  • Freshman Ellie Wisch scored twice for the second time in her career.
