Baseball Battles Michigan State This Weekend

Nittany Lions meet Spartans beginning on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team hosts Michigan State this weekend for a three-game Big Ten series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Friday’s first pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s game is set for 2 p.m. and Sunday’s will start at 1 p.m. All games will be broadcast on B1G+.

 

All home games are free admission for all ages.

 

Friday’s game is 800 Strong Night, encouraging support from fellow Penn State student-athletes, and includes a trucker hat giveaway for the first 200 students.

 

Saturday includes postgame autographs and a trading card giveaway.

 

Sunday is Bark in the Park in honor of National Puppy Day, welcoming dogs to the ballpark, and kids run the bases after the game.

 

Penn State, led by head coach Mike Gambino, is 15-5 this season and 4-2 in the Big Ten after splitting its midweek games.

 

Michigan State, coached by Jake Boss, is 14-6 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten after Wednesday’s win over Oakland.

  • Penn State started Big Ten play with series victories in each of its first two series for the first time since 2014.
  • The Nittany Lions have tallied 10+ runs in 13 games this season, ranking third in the country (behind only LSU and VMI), and four times in six Big Ten games. PSU has 13 games of 10+ runs in a season for the seventh time in program history (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2023, 2024).

NITTANY LIONS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN HOMERS, STEALS

  • Through 20 games, Penn State has slugged 38 home runs.
  • The Nittany Lions rank 12th in the country, and leads the Big Ten, averaging 1.90 homers per game.
  • Penn State also ranks 13th in the nation in total home runs and 26th in slugging percentage (.534).
  • Paxton Kling leads the Nittany Lions with nine homers, while sitting 15th in the country in total homers and 25th in home runs per game (0.45).
  • Kling is among nine Nittany Lions with at least one home run this season and is one of eight with multiple homers.
  • Jesse Jaconski and Jack Porter each own five homers, while Joe Jaconski, Bryce Molinaro, Nate Voss and Ryan Weingartner each have four homers. Cole Wagner has two.
  • Penn State is the only Big Ten team with seven players with 4+ homers this season.
  • Penn State has launched four grand slams, including two by Kling, one by Molinaro and one by Voss.
  • The Nittany Lions are also eighth in the country in stolen bases per game (3.0), pacing the Big Ten.

NITTANY LIONS WIN IN EVANSTON

  • Penn State earned a series win at Northwestern, claiming the first two games of the series.
  • The Nittany Lions collected 40 hits and 26 runs, while blasting eight homers and stealing nine bases.
  • Jack Porter homered in all three games in the series.
  • In game one on Friday, Paxton Kling had three hits, including a homer, and three RBI, while Porter notched three hits, with a homer, and two RBI. Jesse Jaconski added a homer and three RBI.
  • On the mound, Ryan DeSanto fired five shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and struck out five. Anthony Steele followed with a career-high three innings and a career best-tying five strikeouts.
  • In Saturday’s first game, Kling had a double and a solo homer among three hits, while Jaconski drove in three runs with a homer and a two-run single. Porter added a two-run homer.
  • Mason Butash and Ben DeMell combined for six scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
  • In game three, PSU rallied for five runs in the sixth, boosted by a two-run homer by Bryce Molinaro and a solo blast by Porter.
