Baseball Welcomes Indiana For Big Ten Opening Series

Nittany Lions, Hoosiers set for three-game series beginning on Friday at noon

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team hosts Indiana at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this weekend for its Big Ten opening series. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday at noon and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. All games will be broadcast on B1G+.

All home games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park are free admission for all ages.

Sunday’s game will feature postgame autographs and a trading card giveaway as well as kids run the bases.

Penn State, led by head coach Mike Gambino, is 9-1 on the season after a 7-6 win over FDU on Tuesday.

PSU is off to a 9-1 start for the first time since 1980 and has won eight-straight games for the first time since 2016.

Indiana, coached by Jeff Mercer, are 6-7 after dropping a 13-11 decision against Northern Kentucky on Tuesday.

PSU’S STRONG START

  • After a 3-0 weekend in Virginia and a 7-6 win over FDU, the Nittany Lions are off to an 9-1 start.
  • Penn State is 9-1 to start a season for the first time since 1980.
  • The Nittany Lions enter the Indiana series with an eight-game win streak, its first time winning eight-straight since 2016.
  • Penn State entered its William & Mary game on a streak of five-straight games with 10+ runs, the first time PSU has done that since 1978.

NITTANY LIONS SWEEP IN VIRGINIA

  • Penn State earned three wins in Virginia.
  • The Nittany Lions picked up a 17-6 run-rule victory at Richmond on Friday, a 16-7 win at VCU on Saturday and a 7-6 victory at William & Mary on Sunday.
  • The Nittany Lions batted .333 on the weekend with 38 hits and 37 RBI, while positng 40 runs.
  • Among the 38 hits were four doubles, a triple and seven homers.
  • PSU hit three homers on Friday at Richmond, including a grand slam by Paxton Kling, a three-run homer by Cole Wagner and a solo shot by Ryan Weingartner.
  • The Nittany Lions followed with four homers at VCU, including a pair of two-run homers by Jesse Jaconski, a grand slam by Nate Voss and a solo homer by Cole Wagner.
  • Wagner collected six hits on the weekend, while Matt Maloney had eight hits with multi-hit performances in each game.
  • On the mound, Dimond Loosli picked up a win and posted three shutout innnings, while Ben DeMell earned a win on Saturday with 2.1 shutout frames.

NITTANY LIONS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN HOMERS

  • Through 10 games, Penn State has slugged 20 home runs.
  • The Nittany Lions rank seventh in the country, and second in the Big Ten, averaging 2.00 homers per game.
  • Penn State also ranks 18th in the nation in total home runs and 19th in slugging percentage (.551).
  • Paxton Kling leads the Nittany Lions with six homers, while sitting 15th in the country in total homers and 10th in home runs per game (0.67).
  • Kling is among eight Nittany Lions with at least one home run this season and is one of five with multiple homers.
  • Jesse Jaconski, Nate Voss and Ryan Weingartner own three homers, while Cole Wagner has two and Joe Jaconski, Matt Maloney and Jack Porter and each have one.

KLING CLAIMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

  • Penn State junior outfielder Paxton Kling was tabbed Big Ten Player of the Week and Perfect Game National Player of the Week for his efforts in PSU’s sweep at Longwood.
  • Kling batted 7-of-13 (.538) at the plate with four homers, a double, six RBI and seven runs.
  • He notched a 1.538 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
  • Kling launched two homers, including a three-run shot, in Saturday’s first game. It was his first career multi-homer game.
  • Kling added a solo homer, a double and two runs in Saturday’s second game.
  • He led off Sunday’s contest with a homer and added two hits and two steals, while scoring three runs.
