Women’s Tennis Finishes Play at ITA All-Americans

Five Nittany Lions brought home victories at the event in Cary, North Carolina

Cary, N.C. - The Penn State women’s tennis team concluded two days of work at ITA All-Americans on Saturday and Sunday. Five Nittany Lions were able to secure victories, with Patricia Grigoras earning two singles wins in the main draw of prequalifying action. 

On the first day, five Nittany Lions competed in prequalifying singles, with Brianna Baldi leading it off. In a true back-and-forth affair, the sophomore fell to Wake Forest’s Kady Tannenbaum, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. Grigora, also a sophomore, picked up the first win of the day when she defeated UCLA’s Bianca Fernandez, 6-2, 6-4. 

Jordina Cegarra and Olivia Dorner dropped both of their singles matches in two sets. Maelie Monfils concluded singles play with a three-set victory over Vanderbilt’s Sonya Macavei in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision. 

In doubles play, Cegarra and Maiko Uchijima dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match to Ashlee Narker and Julia Camblor of Iowa State. Dorner and Monfils battled Arkansas’ No. 78 Anet Koskel and Carolina Gomez Alonso to a tight finish, ultimately falling 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 to conclude the first day of the event.  

Grigoras started the second day with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Florida State’s MaryBoyce Deatherage to continue her advance through the singles bracket. The Middle Village, New York native dropped her next match to Utah’s Emma Kamper, 6-4, 6-4. 

Maelie Monfils dropped her second-round matchup to Florida’s Lucie Pawlak, 6-2, 6-4. In consolation singles play, Baldi, Dorner and Cegarra all fell in their respective matches. 

The Blue & White earned two wins in consolation doubles play to conclude the tournament. The pair of Dorner and Monfils took down No. 85 Meg McCarty and Sandugash Kenzhibayeva of Kansas in a 6-4, 6-4 decision. The night finished with Cegarra and Uchijima defeating Tulane’s Leigh Van Zyl and Campbell Ricci in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2. 

The Nittany Lions return to action on Oct. 3-5 at the Martha Thorn Invitational hosted by West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia.
