Wisconsin Downs Men’s Soccer in Chilly Road Contest

MADISON, Wis. – On a cold night in Madison, Wisconsin, Penn State men’s soccer dropped a 2-0 contest to the Badgers on McClimon Track/Soccer Complex.

Penn State falls to 5-7-3 (1-5-2 B1G) with the result, while the Badgers improve to 6-7-0 (3-5-0 B1G).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First half

Both teams opened the game with strong build-ups, but neither could garner a shot in the first 20 minutes of action.

The Badgers were the first squad to get a look on frame, and the team made it count when a Penn State turnover by the defensive line after a last ditch failed clear came right back to a Wisconsin attacker’s feet near the endline. The ensuing cross ended right on the foot of a Wisconsin forward, who buried his shot in the back of the net in the 27th minute.

Penn State’s only shot of the half came immediately after the Badger tally. Less than 13 seconds after the restart, redshirt senior Van Danielson streaked down the field to get a one-on-one look against the UW goalkeeper. The netminder made a diving effort save to force the shot wide of the frame.

The Badgers got their second tally in the 35th minute when a slow full half build up from Wisconsin ended in another cross from the right wing. PSU’s defense was unable to corral the loose ball, and Wisconsin was able to put away a look from the top of the Nittany Lion penalty box.

Second half

The second half began with more play in the Nittany Lions defensive end.

The Nittany Lions neglected to get a single shot off until the 73rd minute, but the blast from junior Caden Grabfelder came from well beyond the Wisconsin 18-yard box and the netminder had little trouble with the stop.

PSU got off just two more shots the rest of the game and only one was on frame, but again the Wisconsin goalkeeper made the stop to keep the clean sheet.

OF NOTE

  • Evans’s made three stops in the contest.
