KICKIN’ IT
Sophomore forward Aubrey Kulpa has already had a banner week in terms of individual recognition, securing a midseason placement on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The MAC Hermann Trophy honors the top player in college soccer, with the Cromwell, Connecticut, native firmly in that conversation with her 21 points split between eight foals and five assists. Kulpa ranks second in the conference in total goals and total scoring, while ranking 22nd in the nation with her 21 points. Kulpa was tabbed as one of 15 forwards across all of women’s college soccer to earn a spot on the watch list, joining some of the best strikers from across the country. Across the 35-member list, Kulpa was one of just four student-athletes representing the Big Ten Conference, joining a trio of defenders in Michigan State’s Kennedy Bell, Ohio State’s Ava Bramblett and UCLA’s Jennie Immethun. Kulpa is also the only representative hailing from the state of Connecticut and the greater New England region as a whole.
Sparked by a goal of the year candidate from senior forward Amelia White in the first half of play and delivered by an 80th-minute match-winner from graduate forward Kaitlyn MacBean, Penn State battled for an impressive 2-1 road victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last Saturday, October 4, from Yurcak Field. Following Penn State’s second consecutive 2-1 road victory, the Nittany Lions improved to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Big Ten Conference play. The Blue & White continued their recent run of success against the Scarlet Knights, going unbeaten against their rivals to the east in each of the last four matchups while going 3-0-1 against Rutgers in that span. The Nittany Lions published one of their most thoroughly impressive team results on Saturday against the Scarlet Knights. PSU won the battle on the shot chart for the ninth time and managed to muster its second-highest shot total of the 2025 season with 22 total tries, 11 in each half. PSU out-shot Rutgers by a 22-9 margin and racked up a 10-5 margin in shots on goal, doubling the Scarlet Knights up on their home field. The Nittany Lions also managed to eke out a 6-5 win in the corner kick competition, rising to 3-1-0 when outcornering their opponents this year. In addition to the pair of goals, freshman midfielder Sophia Weixler secured her first collegiate point on a first-half assist to White.
KULPA’S KILLIN’ IT
Sophomore forward Aubrey Kulpa has been the star of the show for Penn State early on in the 2025 campaign, pacing the Nittany Lion roster with eight goals and 21 points. The Cromwell, Connecticut, native booked the highest-scoring performance of her collegiate career four weeks ago, dropping five points with a goal and three assists in the win over Maryland on September 11. The second-year sensation ranks prominently in both the Big Ten Conference and Division I in multiple statistical categories. Kulpa owns 0.62 goals per match (second in B1G, 50th in DI), eight total goals (second in B1G, 29th in DI), two match-winning goals (seventh in B1G), 21 total points (second in B1G, 22nd in DI), 1.62 points per match (second in B1G, 31st in DI) and a shot-on-target percentage of 0.556 (second in B1G). Kulpa has participated in 36 matches at the collegiate level to date, starting in 14 of those opportunities. In that span, she owns 38 total points split between 15 goals and eight assists, all the while maintaining a dominant .576 shot-on-goal percentage in her pair of seasons at PSU.

HOSTING THE HUSKIES
Under the direction of sixth-year head coach and 19-year head coaching veteran Nicole Van Dyke, the Washington Huskies travel to University Park boasting a 7-1-5 overall record coupled with a 4-0-2 start to league play. The Huskies currently sit atop the Big Ten table with 14 points thus far, one point clear of west coast rival UCLA following their 1-0 upset victory Sunday. Washington is currently in the midst of a six-match unbeaten streak that correlates with their undefeated opening to Big Ten competitions. The Huskies have won each of their last two fixtures against No. 4 UCLA (1-0) and on the road at Purdue (3-1). UW last suffered a defeat on Thursday, September 4, in a surprise 1-0 defeat to the Utah Utes at home in Seattle. On an individual basis, the Huskies are paced by reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Jadyn Holdenried, who boasts 15 points and six total goals on the campaign to date. Alex Buck leads the way in the passing game with four assists, while starting goalkeeper Tanner Ijams has swatted away 32 saves with a solid .821 save percentage.
STORY OF THE SERIES
Penn State and Washington prepare for their fifth all-time meeting on Thursday evening, in addition to the first meeting of the two programs as Big Ten Conference rivals. PSU trails the nascent all-time series by a 1-3-0 differential with the last meeting coming during the 2010 season. Thursday's matchup will be the fourth on-campus meeting of the two programs as well as the second all-time fixture in University Park. The programs first met in Penn State's second varsity season in 1995, with the Huskies picking up a decisive 5-0 victory at home in Seattle on October 6 of that year. Three consecutive one-goal matches followed, with Washington picking up two of those three with both wins coming in the Pacific Northwest, once in Seattle and once in Portland, Oregon, in the most recent fixture on September 10, 2010. Penn State's only win in the series came on August 26, 2005, with the Blue & White logging a hard-fought 3-2 result on Jeffrey Field. That 2005 Nittany Lion roster went on to publish a 23-2-0 overall record and ultimately reached the College Cup.
