No. 3 Men's Hockey Blanked at No. 1 Michigan State, 5-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 3 Penn State dropped a, 5-0, decision to No. 1 Michigan State in Big Ten Conference action at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions fall to 9-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference action with the loss while MSU moves to 7-1-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in the Big Ten with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Spartans opened the scoring for the second straight game off an odd-man rush as Porter Martone found Charlie Stramel streaking across the blueline and down the slot and he laced a wrister far side and past the blocker of PSU freshman goaltender Josh Fleming (Montreal, Quebec) for the 1-0 lead at 2:31 of the first period.
  • The hosts extended the lead late in the opening period as Martone finished off a feed from Stramel into a yawning net after catching the Nittany Lions changing for the 2-0 edge at the 18:37 mark.
  • MSU pushed the margin to 3-0 midway through the second period as a harmless wrister by Colin Ralph from the blueline found the back of the net through traffic as Fleming never saw it at the 11:56 mark.
  • Stramel would later hit the empty net at the 15:37 mark and Anthony Romani converted on a 5-on-3 powerplay for the 5-0 margin at 16:56 of the third period.

GOALTENDING

Fleming draws the short stick for the first time this season falling to 4-1-0 on the year after making a career-high 43 saves including a single-period career-best 16 during the second frame while his counterpart, Trey Augustine, improves to 6-1-0 after stopping all 36 shots he faced in the victory.

NOTES

  • Michigan State held the 48-36 edge in shots on goal while going 1-for-7 on the powerplay and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
  • The Nittany Lions were shutout for the first time since a 4-0 loss at Ohio State on December 5 of last year.
