No. 3 Men's Hockey Drops OT Heartbreaker at No. 1 Michigan State, 2-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Junior Kevin Reidler (Gavle, Sweden) stood tall between the pipes for No. 3 Penn State collecting 30 saves in a tough, 2-1, overtime loss to No. 1 Michigan State in Big Ten Conference action at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night.

The Nittany Lions see their seven-game winning streak snapped as they drop to 9-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference action while MSU moves to 6-1-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the Big Ten with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Spartans opened the scoring after corralling a loose puck at the far post Anthony Romani spun and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Reidler for the 1-0 edge at 17:09 of the first period.
  • The Nittany Lions evened the contest late in the second period as senior Ben Schoen (Maumee, Ohio) made a strong play behind the net and raced up the half wall before finding freshman Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, Yukon) who stopped on a dime and sent a seam pass toward the back post that redirected off a Spartan skate and into the yawning net for the 1-1 score at the 16:23 mark.
  • Neither team was able to light the lamp in the third period, so each side earned one point in the conference standings as the game entered bonus time.
  • Michigan State found the golden goal midway through the extra session just after a near miss from Penn State sophomore Charlie Cerrato (Fallston, Md.) on a puck that crawled over and down the back of Spartan goaltender Trey Augstine and fell just harmlessly outside the post.
  • It was Tiernan Shoudy who was left all alone by the near post and he outwaited Reidler before roofing the puck for the 2-1 victory at the 2:21 mark.

GOALTENDING

Reidler falls to 5-2-0 on the year after his 30-save effort while Augustine moves to 5-1-0 after stopping 24-of-25 shots he faced in the victory.

NOTES

  • Michigan State held the 32-25 edge in shots on goal.
  • Penn State went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill, however, they were 0-for-4 on the man-advantage themselves marking the first game this season they failed to score on the powerplay.
  • McKenna extends his career-best point streak to five games with his second period goal.
  • Senior defenseman Carter Schade (Mars, Pa.) skated in his 100th career game on Friday night.
  • Excluding empty net goals 11 of the last 12 games in the season series have been decided by one goal with six now advancing to extra time.
