SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Penn State women’s ice hockey team netted goals in all three period to win their eighth straight over the Orange by a score of 4-1 at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With just over three minutes left in the first period, Grace Outwater won a puck battle along the boards and took a one-timer to the top right corner, giving the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead before the break.
- 20 seconds into the second period Leah Stecker took a shot towards the net that ricocheted off of Nicole Hall right to Mya Vaslet who took a one-timer and scored to double the Nittany Lion lead.
- Six and a half minutes into the second period, Syracuse’s Macleod went on a 2-on-1 offensive zone rush with Heidi Knoll who she passed it to and Knoll beat Maddy Campbell to get one goal back for the Orange.
- Near the halfway mark the of the third period, Kendall Butze stepped up from the point after receiving a pass from Taylor Lum and fired a shot through traffic that found its way to the back of the next.
- As Syracuse was attempting to enter the offensive zone on the power play and with an extra attacker, Taya MacDonald made a poke check to free up the puck and Tessa Janecke picked it up and fired it into the empty net with three minutes to play.
GOALTENDERS
- Penn State freshman goaltender Maddy Campbell made 13 saves in the win.
- Syracuse goaltender Ava Drabyk made 36 saves in the loss.
STATS AND NOTES
- Penn State had four different goal scorers with Outwater, Vaslet, Butze, and Janecke each finding the back of the net.
- The Nittany Lions have now won eight straight games over the Orange by a combined score of 40-7.
- Grace Outwater and Tessa Janecke each scored and lead PSU in goals with 14 each.
- They now also lead Atlantic Hockey America in goals.
- Nicole Hall had two assists for her fourth multi-point game of the season.
- Kendall Butze scored her second goal of the season and 12th of her career, bringing her into sole possession of fourth all-time among defenseman in career goals.
- Tessa Janecke extended her point streak to four games.
- Mya Vaslet scored her second game-winning goal of the season with her second period goal holding up as the game-winner.
