Men’s Tennis Defeats Cleveland State and Fordham 6-1

Kyle Chesman, Christos Glavas, Emil Matikainen, Eyal Shyovitz, and Michael Wright had impressive wins in their Penn State debuts

 

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The men’s tennis team completed its first matches of the season in a home doubleheader against Cleveland State and Fordham on Saturday. The Nittany Lions started the day with a 6-1 win over the Cleveland State Vikings and ended the day with the same score over the Fordham Rams. 

 

Kyle Chesman, Christos Glavas, Emil Matikainen, Eyal Shyovitz, and Michael Wright all carried impressive wins in their Penn State debuts. Glavas and Shyovitz ended their doubles play over Fordham’s William Lokier and Nicolas Garnier quickly. Chesman earned a singles victory against Fordham’s Timotey Stofa. Matikainen, Shyovitz, and Wright earned doubles and singles victories across both matches. 

 

Sophomore returners Reiya Hattori, David Lindsay, and Marcus Schoeman each contributed to the team’s success with doubles and singles victories. Hattori and Schoeman both earned two doubles and two singles victories, and Lindsay carried one doubles and two singles wins. 

 

CLEVELAND STATE 

Doubles 

On court one, Lindsay and Wright defeated Lincoln Battle and Carl Gedlitschka 6-3. 

Hattori and Schoeman defeated Maxime Aremon and Tristan Stine 6-4 on court two, earning the Nittany Lions the doubles point. 

On court three, Matikainen and Shyovitz faced Nicholas Jamison and Cole Chappell, but the match went unfinished at a score of 5-5. 

Singles 

On court three, Hattori quickly defeated Aremon 6-1, 6-2. 

Schoeman defeated Jamison 6-1, 6-2 in a battle at court two. 

In the fourth spot, Lindsay took down Gedlitschka 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a heated match. 

Battle defeated Wright 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 on court one. 

At court number five, Shyovitz defeated Chappell 6-0, 6-2. 

Matikainen defeated Stine 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 10-8 in a race to the finish line and secured Penn State its sixth point. 

 

FORDHAM 

Doubles 

Shyovitz and Christos Glavas took the win over Lokier and Garnier 6-2 on court three. 

Hattori and Schoeman took down Dhananjay Karthik Athreya and Mateusz Gradzki 6-2 on court two, earning Penn State its first point of the match. 

On court one, Wright and Lindsay led Dhillon Virdee-Oakley and Diego Cueto de Romana 5-3, before the match went unfinished. 

Singles 

Wright took court one, yet again, and defeated Gradzki 6-2, 7-5. 

Schoeman finished the fight with Virdee-Oakley 6-4, 6-3. 

Hattori defeated Lokier 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 on court two. 

Lindsay took down Cueto de Romana 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. 

Kyle Chesman made his Penn State debut, taking down Stofa 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, winning his tie-breaker match and a sixth point for the Nittany Lions. 

Eyal Shyovitz fought to the end against Dhananjay Karthik Athreya, but fell 7-5, 3-6, 7-10.
