Nittany Lions Conclude Competition at Dave Michanik Penn Invitational

Penn State finished day two of its competition at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Nittany Lions completed their competition at the Dave Michanik Penn Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Sunday, January 18.  

NO. 5 / 7 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY  

In the first round of competition of the day, the men and women lost their bouts against Ohio State. The women lost 18-9 against the No. 7 team in the country with the men going 15-12 against the No. 5 ranked team.   

The women’s foil team saw Sam Catantan go 2-1 as Penn State was unable to earn a victory in the last bout of the matchup, losing 5-4. Thea Fernandes and Eden De La Cruz each provided an additional win for Penn State.  

On the men’s side, foil won a tight 5-4 match. Spencer Burke and Tit Nam Cheng each fenced 2-1 with another victory from Yaroslav Muruhin to take the win.  

Penn State women’s epee lost 9-0 to the Buckeyes. 

The men’s epee team also took a 5-4 victory. Mohammed Yassin and Sultan Hassan provided one win each as Tim Xu started day two of the competition going undefeated to propel the Nittany Lions to a victory.  

The women’s saber team took a 5-4 victory against their Big Ten rivals. Eunyu Kim started day two of the competition with an undefeated performance as Eve Scott went 2-1.  

In a 7-2 loss in men’s saber, Carlos Fernando Chacon and Michael Nil provided the two wins for Penn State.  

FARLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY 

The women’s team took a dominant 21-6 win over Farleigh Dickinson University in round two of the competition.  

In a 7-2 victory for the women’s foil team, both Catantan and De La Cruz fenced undefeated against FDU. Clarisse Tan provided the additional win to take the 7-2 victory.  

The women’s epee squad won a tightly contested 5-4 match over FDU. Sophia Abashidze went 2-1 and earned the victory point in the team match. Emma Holmes, Lena Gyenes and Yuna Tamura each secured additional victories to take the win.  

In a dominating 9-0 win, the women’s saber team saw Stephanie Jen, Mia Novick and Amelia Baker all fence undefeated.   

YALE 

The Penn State men’s and women’s team both lost in its competition against Yale. The men lost 15-12 as the women fell to the No. 18 squad in the country, 18-9. 

The men’s foil team took a 6-3 win over the Bulldogs. Cheng added an undefeated performance to his win total on the day as Muruhin fenced 2-1 with an additional victory from Alessio Fukuda 

One the women’s side, the Nittany Lions lost 7-2. Catantan and Fernandes earned the only two wins for Penn State against the No. 18 ranked team in the country.  

The men’s epee team took a 5-4 loss over Yale. Zachary Suico fenced undefeated against the Bulldogs with another victory from Yassin.   

The women’s epee team lost 6-3. Tamura, Gyenes and Holmes all earned one victory each. 

In a 7-2 loss, the men’s saber team earned one victory each from Tyson Deck and Chacon. 

The women’s saber team lost 5-4. Kim and Scott continued impressive starts during day two of the competition, each fencing 2-1 over No. 18 Yale.  

NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 

In the last set of matches for Penn State, the women’s team won 21-6 over the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  

The women’s foil team won 7-2 against NJIT. De La Cruz fenced undefeated for the second time on the day. Fernandes and Tan completed their competition by going 2-1 each.  

In an 8-1 victory, the women’s epee squad Gyenes and Tamura each went undefeated as Abashidze closed out the competition by going 2-1.  

For the women’s saber team, they earned a 6-3 victory. Jen fenced undefeated for the second time on the day. Novick provided 2 more wins and Baker added an additional victory.  

NEXT UP 

Penn State will host its first home meet of the season on Sunday, January 25. More details regarding meet information will be provided closer to the competition.
