Lady Lions Fall to Oregon, 89-59

McFadden and McMiller add 15 points each

EUGENE, Wash. – Penn State women’s basketball drops 89-59 decision at Oregon on Saturday in Matthew Knight Arena. The Lady Lions fall to 7-14, 0-10 Big Ten while the Ducks improve to 15-7, 3-6 Big Ten. Despite a close battle in the first quarter, Oregon created separation in the second and third frames, which the Lady Lions were unable to claw back from.

Freshman guard/forward Nyla McFadden reached the double figure scoring mark for the fourth time this season. She added 15 points on six-of-eight shooting from the floor. The freshman also led the team on the glass, grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore guard Kiyomi McMiller produced double-digit points for the 20th time this season, posting 15 points on seven-of-15 shooting. Tèa Clèante dished out four assists for the team lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

The Lady Lions got off to a hot start in the early minutes of the first stanza. McFadden drained a shot from beyond the arc to spark a 7-0 run for PSU. Steele and Clèante added baskets down low to complete the stretch that forced Oregon to use an early timeout. A scoreless period for both squads was snapped by the Ducks, adding just their first points of the contest at the 6:09 mark. Santana answered with a three-pointer on the other end to extend to a 10-4 lead for Penn State. Oregon added back-to-back baskets to cut the margin to four. The Ducks produced eight unanswered points to tie the game at 10-10. Viktoria Ranisavljevic added a pair of points, but Oregon’s six-straight gave the home team a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

Oregon built its lead to eight points to begin the second frame. A three-pointer from Shaelyn Steele and a set of points from McMiller cut the margin to three. The Ducks quickly reverted the gap to eight with five-straight points. McMiller put up a mid-range jumper, but a shot from beyond the arc gave the Ducks a nine-point advantage as the Lady Lions called a timeout. The team’s traded points out of the break with Clèante adding a pair of points and McMiller posting four. Two free throws for the Ducks were followed by a three-point play for McMiller on the other end. After Oregon got a quick set of points on a fast break, Ranisavljevic completed a three-point play to cut the margin to 38-31 with under two minutes to play. As the shot clock expired, Ranisavljevic drained a shot from long-range. The Ducks had the final word of the second quarter, creating a 40-34 lead at the break.

Third Quarter

Clèante added one shot from the charity stripe to get the third quarter started, but the Ducks immediately responded with two buckets on their offensive possessions. McFadden capitalized on a second chance opportunity for PSU. The team’s traded three-pointers with McFadden draining her second of the day amidst three-straight for the Ducks. Oregon sparked a 14-0 run to create a 21-point edge at the 3:34 mark. McMiller broke the PSU dry spell with a pullup jumper, but the Ducks added five-straight points to extend their lead to 66-42. Clèante only drained one of her free shots and Oregon took advantage, adding a layup in fast break fashion. The Ducks utilized two-straight miscues for Lady Lions to build a 29-point lead with one minute remaining in the third stanza. Murray attempted to chip at the deficit, but Oregon added a final bucket to finalize a 74-45 lead after 30 minutes of game action.

Fourth Quarter

Oregon picked up where it left off, drawing the margin to 31 in the early seconds of the final stanza. McMiller added to PSU’s point total with a layup, but the Ducks answered with two on their offensive end. McFadden made one of her two shots from the charity stripe after a three-minute scoreless stretch. Oregon continued to convert on the offensive end, adding two more points. McFadden made two consecutive shots to surpass the double-digit point mark. The Ducks added two points to follow before missed opportunities for both teams. McFadden drove hard to the basket for a pair of points, but the Ducks silenced her efforts with two points on their end. The squads traded a free throw on each side of the court throughout a scoring drought. In the final minutes, Penn State added four points while Oregon added two to finish off a 89-59 win for the Ducks.
