UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Nittany Lions traveled to Staten Island, N.Y. to fence in the Brian Palestis Memorial Invitational at Wagner College on Sunday, February 1.
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA
In the first round of competition, both the men and women lost against the University of North Carolina. The women lost 22-5 as the men fell 18-9.
The men’s saber team lost 8-1 against the Tar Heels with Carlos Fernando Chacon earning the only win for the Nittany Lions.
On the women’s side, saber earned two victories from Stephanie Jen and Mia Novick.
Yaroslav Muruhin fenced 2-1 with two additional victories from both Spencer Burke and Tit Nam Cheng in a 5-4 loss in men’s foil.
Thea Fernandes and Eden De La Cruz scored both victories for the Nittany Lions against the Tar Heels.
Both Tim Xu and Mohammed Yassin fenced 2-1 against UNC in men’s epee in a 5-4 loss.
Freshman Yuna Tamura secured the only victory in women’s epee

During the second round of the invitational, the men secured a victory against the University of Pennsylvania as the women lost. The Penn State men’s squad won 14-13 in a tight match over the No. 8 ranked men’s team in the country as the women fell 22-5 against the No. 3 ranked woman’s team in the country.
Chacon fenced 2-1 for the men’s saber squad and they lost 7-2 over UPenn.
The women’s foil team lost 9-0 against UPenn.
Both Burke and Cheng fenced 2-1 with an additional victory from Muruhin in a tight 5-4 victory over UPenn in men’s foil.
De La Cruz earned two more victories following a 2-1 performance in women’s foil with another win from Fernandes.
The men’s epee team saw Sultan Hassan fence undefeated with a 2-1 performance from Xu and an additional win from Yassin to take a 6-3 win.
Sophia Abashidze and Tamura earned the two victories for Penn State during the women’s epee matchup against UPenn.
VASSAR COLLEGE
Both the men and women secured team victories against Vassar College. The men won 17-10 with as the women won 19-8.
Chacon fenced 2-1 for the second time on the day with another win from Tyson Deck as the men’s saber team lost 6-3.
The Penn State women’s saber team came close to a victory, ultimately losing 5-4. Emma Holmes and Amelia Baker each earned a victory as Novick added two additional wins onto her total for the competition.
The men’s foil team fenced 9-0 against Vassar College. Alessio Fukuda, Cheng and Burke all fenced undefeated, 3-0.
The women’s foil team also fenced to a 9-0 undefeated victory. Clarisse Tan, Fernandes and De La Cruz all fenced 3-0.
Following an undefeated performance in men’s foil, the men’s epee team won 5-4. Both Sebastian Bonomo and Mohammed Yassin fenced 2-1 with another victory from Hassan to win 5-4 over Vassar.
The women’s epee team won 6-3 with Lena Gyenes, Abashidze and Tamura all fencing 2-1 to earn the team victory.
NO. 17 / NO. 22 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
Both the men’s and women’s squads lost against Columbia University. The men lost 22-5 against the No. 17 ranked men’s team in the country as the women lost to the No. 22 ranked women’s team, 23-4.
In men’s saber, Columbia won 9-0.
Holmes earned the only victory for the women’s saber team against Columbia in an 8-1 loss.
The men’s foil team lost 7-2 with two wins from Burke and Muruhin.
The women’s foil team lost 9-0 to Columbia.
Yassin fenced 2-1 and Xu earned one victory in a 6-3 loss to Columbia in men’s epee.
Tamura fenced 2-1 with an additional victory from Gyenes in a 6-3 loss in women’s epee.
NEXT UP
Penn State will travel to Durham, N.C. to fence in the Duke Invitational at Duke University beginning on Saturday, February 7 going into Sunday, February 8.
